National Geographic Society WASHINGTON,D.C. 20036 U.S.A.

Phyllis Diller Senior President Dear Member,

Your National Geographic Society membership is just about to end To continue receiving National Geographic for another year, please make your membership continue for a further period of time.

Then get ready to enjoy 60 interesting Geographic articles and as many as five colorful new maps scheduled for the coming year.

Think back to the places you’ve been — the things you’ve seen — only in your National Geographic. What a valuable reference library they make for a better understanding of our world. As your collection of magazines grows, you and your family will continue to use and refer to them — year after year! It’s like an encyclopedia (百科全書)that continually updates itself.

There’s more to membership than the magazine and the maps. You also have the satisfaction of knowing that your dues support the Society's research and geography education projects.

Incredibly, only a few pennies a day brings you membership, magazines, and maps. Divide that by the number of people who benefit from your membership, and you'11 see how little it costs to gain so much.

I think you’ll agree, and you won't find a better bargain anywhere. Continue the adventure. Make your membership continue today.

Sincerely Phyllis Diller

Instagram is a fast, beautiful and fun way to share your life with friends and family. Take a picture or video, choose a filter ter transform its look and feel, and then post to Instagram it's that easy. You can even share to Facebook, Twitter and more. It’s a new way to see the world. So many photos of food are contained on Instagram — now a pop-up dinner in London is taking the advantage of this new trend by letting people settle the bill for their meals simply by uploading photos of their dishes to social networks.

I always thought people5 s taking pictures of their food was kind of silly, blit at this new pop-up restaurant in the UK, I’d probably do it too. “The Picture House” is the world’s first pay-by-photo restaurant — you order, click a photo of the food, share on Instagram and eat for free!

The restaurant belongs to food giant Birds Eye, who came up with the idea to cash in on people's addiction with photographing food and sharing the pictures online. They concluded a survey and found out that more than half of the British population regularly took pictures of their meals. So they realized it was a better way to advertise their new dining range.

The pop-up dinner was open in Soho, London for three days in May,and is now moving to other major UK cities. They serve two-course meals that customers don't have to pay for, if they photo and Instagram it.

The restaurant is a part of Birds Eye’s “Food For Life” campaign, a new marketing project that aims at changing the way people look at frozen food. “Taking photos o£ food enables people to show off and to share their mealtime moments 一 from the everyday to the special,"said marketing director Margaret Jobling.

The reaction to The Picture House has been great so far. And the pay—by—picture concept has proven to be an effective way. Alternative payment methods are actually gaining popularity among a lot of businesses. Last year in a cafe in Germany customers pay by how much time they spend there, not by what they eat.

24. Instagram probably is

A. a restaurant free of charge B. a campaign of “ Food for Life ”

C. a program used to share photos D. a new marketing project

25. What’s the author’s attitude to this new trend?

A. Confused. B. Unconcerned.

C. Opposed, D. Interested.

26. “ The Picture House ” encourages sharing photos of its food to

A. raise the price of frozen food B . attract more customers

C. create a new social media trend D. reward the regular customers

27. Which of the following can serve as the best title for the passage?

A. Pay by Picture B. The Pop-up Dinner

C. No Need to Pay D. Food for Life

Archaeology, like many academic words, comes from Greek and means, more or less, "the study of old things”. So, it is really a part of the study of history. However, most historians use paper evidence, such as letters, paintings and photographs, but archaeologists (考古學家)learn from the objects left behind by the humans of long ago. Normally, these are the hard materials that don,t break down or disappear very quickly 一 things like human bones and objects made from stone and metal.

It is very unusual to find anything more than the hard evidence of history —— normally, the bacteria in the air eat away at soft materials, like bodies, clothes and things made of wood. Occasionally, things are different.

In 1984,two men made an amazing discovery while working in a bog called Lindow Moss, in the north of England. A bog is a very wet area of earth, with a lot of plants growing in it. It can be like a very big and very thick vegetable soup — walk in the wrong place and you can sink and disappear forever. The men were working when one of them saw something sticking out — a human foot! Naturally, the men called the police, who then found the rest of the body. Was it a case of murder?

Possibly — but it was a death nearly two thousand years old. The two men had found a body from the time of the Roman invasion of Britain. Despite being so old, this body had skin, muscles, hair and internal organs 一 the scientists who examined him were able to look inside the man’s stomach and find the food that he had eaten for his last meal!

Why was this man so well preserved? It was because he was in a very watery environment, safe from the bacteria that need oxygen to live. Also, the water in the bog was very acidic. The acid preserved the man’s skin in the way that animal skin is preserved for leather coats and shoes.

How did he die? Understandably, archaeologists and other scientists wanted to know more about the person that they called “Lindow Man”. His hands and fingernails suggested that he hadn’t done heavy manual work in this life — he could have been a rich man. They found that he hadn’t died by accident. The archaeologists believe that he was sacrificed to three different gods.

28. The underlined word “these” in the first paragraph refers to .

A. letters B. photographs

C. paintings D. objects

29. Which of the following helped to preserve “Lindow Man”?

A. Ice and low temperature B. Acid and water

C. Soil and energy D. Bacteria and oxygen

30. According to the passage, which of the following statements is right?

A. “Lindow Man” was named after the person who first found him.

B. Historians usually use paper evidence, while archaeologists use hard evidence.

C. “Lindow Man” was found by two archaeologists in the south of England.

D. “Lindow Man” was good at work by hand.

31 h is the best title for the passage?

A. An Amazing Archaeological Discovery

B. Archaeology and History

C. What Is Archaeology?

D. The Death of “Lindow Man”

Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

36 Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They cannot or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.

For years doctors thought repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷爾蒙)that are produced during these situations. They spread the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc. 37

Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

38 They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “ 39 Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably. ”

Doctors say a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. 40

A. Anger may cause you a cancer.

B. Do not express your anger while angry.

C. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.

D. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

E. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time.

F. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.

G. Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing.

第二節:寫作

One possible version:

Dear Tom,

I’m Li Hua, a student of Xinhua Middle School. The other day, I learned quite by

chance that you were in need of a book to help you improve your Chinese. I happen to have one, which I think might help you.

The book, entitled New Practical Chinese, is intended for beginners at your level. Not only does it include the basic conversations in our daily life, it is also a window through which you can get to know Chinese culture and customs. Edited by three language experts, it has been popular with the readers ever since it came out two years ago.

If it is convenient to you, let’s meet at 3 pm. this Sunday at the entrance to the People’s Park, where I can give you the book face to face. If not, try to find another time that is suitable for both of us.

Looking forward to your early reply.

Yours,

LiHua
