過去進行時的用法：

1. 構成

was / were+動詞的現在分詞。

2. 基本用法

(1) 表示過去某一時間點或一段時間正在進行的動作。如：

What were you doing this time yesterday? 你昨天這個時候在幹什麼?

Granny fell asleep when she was reading. 奶奶看書時睡着了。

He was writing a book about grammar last year, but I don’t know whether he has finished it.他去年在寫一本語法方面的書，但我不知道他現在是否寫完了。

What were you talking about just now? 你們剛纔在談什麼?

He was working from 7 to 11 last night. 昨晚他從七點一直工作到十一點。

(2) 過去進行時與 always, forever, continually等副詞連用，表示滿意、稱讚、驚訝、厭惡等表示感情色彩。如：

My brother was always losing his keys. 我哥哥老是丟鑰匙。

The boy was continually asking the same question. 這個男孩子老是問同一個問題。

過去將來時的用法：

一、基本結構

would+動詞原形。

二、基本用法

(1) 表示從過去某一時間來看將要發生的事情。常用於賓語從句中。如：

He said he would come. 他說他要來。

He told us he would go with us. 他告訴我們他會和我們一起去。

They were sure that they would win. 他們堅信他們會贏。

【注】在一定的語境中也可於其他從句或句子中：

It was a problem whether they would support us. 他們是否會支持我們還是一個問題。

It was six o’clock. The sun would soon set. 這時是六點鐘。太陽即將落山。

(2) 過去將來時常可用來表示過去習慣性的動作。如:

Whenever he had time, he would help his mother with the housework. 他一有時間就幫媽媽做家務活。

(3) 還可用來表示願望或傾向。如：

He told me that the machine wouldn’t work. 他告訴我機器開不動。

We knew that he would never permit such a thing. 我們知道他決不會允許發生這樣的事。

表示將來時的方法：

①主要表示預先經過考慮的計劃或打算。如：

I’m going to make a dress with the cloth I bought yesterday. 我打算用昨天買的布做個裙子。

We are not going to stay there long. 我們不準備在那裏久待。

Where are you going to spend your holidays?你準備去哪兒度假?

②表示有跡象表明要發生某事。如：

Look at the black clouds— It is going to rain.看那烏雲— 天要下雨了。

There’s going to be a lot of trouble about it. 這事肯定會有許多麻煩。

Li is putting on weight. She’s going to be quite fat. 李的在體重增加，她會很胖的。
