A Governor visiting a state prison was implored by a convict to pardon him.
州長在視察一所州管監獄時，有個罪犯哀求州長寬恕他。
“What are you in for?”asked the Governor.
“你犯了什麼事?”州長問道。
“I held a high office,”the convict humbly replied,“and sold subordinate appointments.”
“我曾經是個高級官員，”犯人低聲下氣地回答，“因爲向下級賣官。”
“Then I decline to interfere,”said the Governor, with asperity,“a man who abuses his office bymaking it serve a private end and purvey a personal advantage is unfit to be free. By the way,Mr. Warden,”he added to the official beside him, as the convict slunk away,“in appointing youto this position, I was given to understand that your friends could make the Shikane countydelegation to the next State convention solid for the present administration. Was I rightlyinformed?”

小學生3分鐘英語故事：真正的勇氣A father was worried about his son, who was sixteen years old but had no courage at all. Sothe father decided to call on a Buddhist monk to train his boy.
一位父親很爲兒子擔心，雖然兒子已經16歲了，卻一點兒勇氣都沒有。於是，父親決定去拜訪一位禪師，請他訓練自己的兒子。
The Buddhist monk said to the boy's father,“You should leave your son alone here. I'll makehim into a real man within three months. However, you can't come to see him during thisperiod.”
禪師對男孩的父親說：“你應該把你兒子單獨留在這裏。不出三個月，我會讓他成爲一個真正的男子漢。不過，在這段時間，你不能來看他。”
Three months later, the boy's father returned. The Buddhist monk arranged a boxing matchbetween the boy and an experienced boxer.
三個月後，男孩的父親又來見禪師。禪師安排這個男孩和一位經驗豐富的拳師進行拳術比賽。
Each time the fighter struck the boy, he fell down, but at once the boy stood up; and each timea punch knocked him down, the boy stood up again. Several times later, the Buddhist monkasked,“What do you think of your child?”
拳師每次一出手，男孩都被擊倒在地上，但男孩又馬上站起來;每次被擊倒，他就又站起來。幾個回合後，禪師問道：“你認爲你的孩子怎麼樣?”
“What a shame!”the boy's father said,“I never thought he would be so easily knocked down. Ineedn't have him left here any longer.”
“真丟人!”男孩的父親說，“我根本沒想到他是這樣的不堪一擊。我不讓他再留在這裏了。”
“I'm sorry that that's all you see. Don't you see that each time he falls down; he stands upagain instead of crying? That's the kind of courage you wanted him to have.”

小學生3分鐘英語故事：貪婪的獾One day, at a farmhouse, a hunting dog saw a fox catching a fat hen. The fox held the hen inits jaws and ran off into the jungle. The hunting dog chased the fox who could not run fastenough because of the hen held between his jaws.
有一天，狐狸在農舍偷肥母雞時被獵狗發現了。狐狸叼起那隻雞拼命地往森林裏逃。狐狸因爲叼着母雞，跑不快，獵狗在後面緊追不捨。
When the fox passed by a badger outside his cave, the fox put down the dead hen andsaid,“Brother Badger, I have stolen this hen from a farm. Would you please hide it in your cavefirst, and we can enjoy our dinner later together?”
這時，正巧碰到一隻獾在洞口附近徘徊，狐狸放下那隻死雞，說道：“獾老弟，我從農舍偷了一隻肥母雞，你先叼回洞裏去吧，晚上咱們一同分享好嗎?”
The badger happily carried the big fat hen into his cave while the fox quickly ran off.
獾興高采烈地把它叼進洞穴裏去了。狐狸飛快地逃走了。
The hunting dog reached the cave and stopped when he saw some blood stains at theentrance.
獵狗追到這個洞時便停了下來，因爲它看見洞穴入口處有雞的血跡。
The badger shouted from inside the cave,“Dear Hunting Dog, the chicken was stolen by thefox. I am not the one responsible!”
獾在洞裏嚇得大叫：“獵狗大叔，雞是狐狸偷的，不關我事!”
The hunting dog replied,“The fox was a thief but you are a greedy badger!”The hunting dogimmediately went inside the cave and killed the badger.
獵狗呵斥道：“狐狸是盜賊，而你是貪便宜的同謀!”獵狗立即跑進洞裏咬死了獾。
