The meaning and significance of hand gestures can differ from one culture to another. Although people and cultures tend to interpret them in their own way, there are still some gestures which hold universal meanings, that is they mean the same everywhere in the world.

每種文化中手勢的意義和重要性都有所不同。雖然人們傾向於用自己的方式理解手勢，但是也有一些是全球通用的喲。

The "V" Sign

~  This gesture was used widely at the time of WWII, in order to symbolize "V for Victory".

這個手勢在二戰時廣爲流傳，代表勝利（Victory）。

~ Then, in the 1960s, when the hippie movement gained impetus in the US, the same sign was used to indicate peace.

上世紀六十年代，嬉皮士運動在美國盛行，這個手勢在當時有和平的意思。

~ Interestingly, in countries, like Japan, China, South Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan, the "V" sign is often used (sometimes, also with the palm facing inwards) to tell a person that he/she is looking cute, while being photographed.

~ However, in the UK, Australia, South Africa, Ireland, and New Zealand, the "V" sign is considered to be an offensive gesture, especially if your palm is facing inwards.

~ In Malaysia, raising the hand is explicitly done to summon waiters, or a person for conveying a message.

~ In Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, this gesture (when done with a right hand) is known as the Abhayamudra, and symbolizes safety and reassurance.

~ Crossing fingers signifies anticipation and good luck. It also symbolizes fortune, hope, and expectation of something.

~ In Christianity, crossing fingers signifies a plea to God for protection against evil. However, in some ancient folkloric traditions, such symbols represented 'lies'.

In Texas this is the University of Texas rallying call because it looks like the horns of a bull. However, in Italy it means you are being tricked, while in Brazil and Veneuela it means you are warding off evil.

德克薩斯大學用這個手勢表示集結，因爲它看起來像牛角。在意大利是被人戲弄的意思，巴西和委內瑞拉則賦予這個手勢驅趕邪惡的意義。
