A Dream Realized

Zhao Yang, 33, an employee of a French company in Beijing, who has traveled extensively in the United States by motorbike.

I have been addicted to Harley-Davidson motorcycles since I was young, and knowing that motorcycle-related culture is very popular in the US, I decided to take a trip. Along with my wife and a group of fellow enthusiasts, I participated in a 15-day tour in October last year. We had one free day, so I headed to Las Vegas.

Before arriving in the US, I researched a range of materials about riding a motorbike there. I also found some classic recommended routes on Chinese websites related to Harley Davidson clubs.

With the help of their suggestions, I designed my own route.

In accordance with the rules, before I left China I visited a notary office (公證機關), where my driving license was confirmed as acceptable in the US and my documents were translated into English. Only then did I buy my basic motorcycle equipment.

When we arrived at Las Vegas, we rented a Harley Davidson and rode around the city. It was an exciting, unforgettable experience, because it was not only the achievement of a dream, but I also experienced the regional motorcycle culture in the US. As we parked the bike at the roadside, some drivers rolled down their car windows and gave us the thumbs-up, and when we drove on the road, car drivers pulled over to let us pass. We also visited a motorcycle-themed restaurant for lunch and enjoyed the fantastic decoration and delicious food.

I believe that traveling by motorcycle in the US will become popular because of the recent joint efforts to promote Sino-US tourism, especially after the two countries decided to name 2016 as US-China Tourism Year. This new style of traveling will attract more young Chinese tourists, and people like me, who have a passion for freedom and adventure, will visit the US more frequently. For example, I am planning to travel along the famous highway called Route 66 with friends during next year's Spring Festival.

If travel agencies and governments can promote the need for motorcyclists to obtain accurate information before they head to the US - such as the required documents, how to rent a motorbike and local traffic laws - "riding the range" will become a safe and great way to spend a vacation.

A. made various research and checked his driving license

B. took the suggestions given and chose the classic route

C. joined one of the Harley Davidson clubs and got suggestions

D. took lots of health examinations and bought some equipment

58. How did Zhao Yang feel when driving in Las Vegas?

A. disturbed B. disappointed C. depressed D. excited

59. Zhao Yang thinks that traveling by motorcycle in the US will ______.

A. enjoy much popularity with Sino-US tourism

B. obtain less American fans in motorcycle travel

Tech Breakthrough on Nib(筆尖) to Help China's Ballpoint Industry

With an annual production of 40 billion ballpoint pens, Chinese ballpoint pen companies could finally end its total dependence on imports of high standard steel for pen nib as breakthrough technology on the part has been proven a success.

Beifa, a leading stationery brand in China, is testing out some pen refills (筆芯) made with “pen nib steel”for the sixth round. The refills have to be capable of writing 800 meters without a break under the same writing angle to pass the test.

Some other stationery brands like TrueColor have also started using the steel in their products.

The steel is likely to replace imported materials completely in two years.

Currently, more than 40 billion ballpoint pens are produced in China annually by more than 3,000 companies and 200,000 workers.

The secret “pen nib steel”

A ballpoint is made up of a ball and a ball seat. The latter is the difficult part to produce, as the seat can only be made out of steel that is easy to cut but resistant to break while it is being made.

The core technique in producing such high-standard steel has been an industry secret only known to a small number of countries, including Japan and Switzerland.

China has to pay 15 million US dollars every year to import more than 1,000 tones of such steel for production.

But the situation is expected to change after China's Shanxi Taigang Stainless Steel Co. figured out the production technique of " the pen nib steel" four months ago — that is, five years after the country started a ballpoint project, with Taigang as the leading participant.

Wang Huimian, a senior engineer with Taigang, said micro-elements are essential in turning raw steel into "pen nib steel" with perfect performance. To work out the right proportion of different elements, Wang said, Taigang's research team has conducted a massive number of experiments as they had no examples to follow or refer to.

After repeated failures, the company finally achieved success in a test in September 2016 and later produced the first batch (批次) of pen nib steel with a diameter of 2.3 mm.

63. What is the breaking news?

A. 40 billion ballpoint pens were produced last year.

B. High standard steel brought Tech breakthrough on nib.

C. Beifa has tried out some pen refills in “pen nib steel”.

D. More high quality steel has been imported abroad.

64. What promoted the independence of China’s ballpoint industry?

A. The government put lots of money to the production of steel.

B. Taigang got the core technique and produced the needed steel.

C. Taigang got to know the importance of high-standard steel.

D. The government negotiated with Switzerland and bought their Tech.

65. Which of the following can best describe the underlined word “resistant”?

A. available B. convenient C. harmful D. difficult

66. What can we learn from the process of making this breakthrough?

A. Where there is a will, there is a way.

B. West and East, home is the best.

C. A good turn deserves a good one back.

D. Man struggles upwards; water flows downwards.

D

Both Males And Females Have Right to Choose Personality

Recently, the debate about males' masculinity (男子漢氣概) has been quite heated. Some people think that males should be different from females and show their masculinity while others hold the view that too much emphasis on masculinity can lead to male violence and an excessive desire for power and status.

While everyone has his or her own opinions, what really matters is that one should have the right to choose their own personality - whether masculine or feminine. Besides, it is important that everyone should respect other people's choices, and should not look down upon others because they do not follow the mainstream.

One of my college classmates has suffered discrimination owing to his personality and clothes. He is a shy boy with a soft voice and he likes dressing in pink shirts, which makes him a little girlish. Some students often talk in the back, saying that he had no masculinity, and some even doubted that he might be gay. During group activities, some students deliberately alienate him. This drove him crazy. He complained to me, "Personal behavior and clothing are my own choices. Why can't other students respect my choice and tolerate my difference?"

Indeed, no one can push others to be manly, but should learn to respect difference. The same goes for females as no one can force females to be feminine.

In the traditional concept, females should be gentle and soft. However, in modern society, more and more women are beginning to focus on their own rights, and have their own thoughts. Some women have made extraordinary achievements in some fields. But brave, decisive and independent females with remarkable achievements at work are often labeled as strong women, which has bad implications. Some people will say these females are too strong and lack the femininity women are supposed to have.

Meanwhile, females' clothing choices are often judged by others. Women these days often dress for comfort. However, this kind of clothing is criticized for not having female charm. There is even a prejudice that females who dress this way are often not accpeted.

In modern society, both males and females have the right to choose whether they want to be masculine or feminine rather than be limited by social stereotypes (老套) based on gender. Only in this way can we further harbor the benefits of gender equality and freedom of choice.

67. The author’s classmate has suffered discrimination because ______.

A. he seems a little crazy B. he doubts everything

C. he behaves like a girl D. he complains too much

68. The strong women are looked down upon because ______.

A. they focus too much on their job B. they never do housework at home

C. they fight for their rights bravely D. they are powerful rather than soft

69. It can be inferred from the passage that________.

A. people should always follow the mainstream

B. women are still the weakest in today’s society

C. freedom of personality choice needs promoting

D. gender equality is something possible nowadays

70. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?

I: Introduction CP: Central point P: Point Sp: Sub-point C: Conclusion

第二節(共5小題;每小題2分,共10分)

根據短文內容,從短文後的七個選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多餘選項。

Parents Model Healthy Eating

It should come as no surprise that the more stressed parents are at work, the greater the burden on their family is. 71 After all, the more time parents spend working, the less time and energy they have to plan and prepare healthful meals.

For years, most studies have focused on the role of working mothers while fathers were ignored. They didn’t look at the family as a whole. 72 It adds a new wrinkle to the relationship between work stress and family nutrition.

Moms’ work related stress is still a central factor in how well families eat because they typically do most of the food shopping and cooking. 73 The study found that when mom or dad experience high levels of work related stress, their families are eating one-and-a-half fewer family meals per week, and the parents themselves report eating fewer fruits and vegetables, more fast food, and are less likely to eat breakfast regularly.

It’s worth noting that the study looked mainly at low income families who belonged to ethnic or minority groups. 74 But the implications are wide ranging.

75 Teaching kids, especially teenagers, to help with grocery shopping and to cook actual meals, instead of just putting a frozen pizza in the microwave, could be an important piece of the puzzle in helping families improves their eating habits.

A. But dad’s work related stress has a large impact, too.

B. As to family nutrition, the entire family plays a role even kids.

C. Yet, the kids’ stress may affect the families’ nutrition, too.

D. So the findings don’t necessarily apply directly to other types of families.

E. It’s also probably not a surprise that this can negatively affect a family’s nutrition.

F. However, a recent study does and look at the role of fathers in particular.

G. It is parents who give their kids a good model to develop a good eating habit.

One Possible Version

Dear Jim,

I’m writing to express my thanks for your help during my stay in the USA. I’ve been back home safely but I am still lost in the good days spent togeter with you and your family.

I’m really grateful for your good care and kind help in America. Arriving there, my language was not very good, and do you still remember you help me with my presentation on Mr. Donald’s lecture? Without your help with my language, I must have fooled myself. Besides this, you took me out to so many places of interests, which brought me a great grasp of ancient and present-day America. The most touching and warmest experience was having met and stayed with your family, which is a democratic, open, friendly and encouraging family. I have to say that I love you all from the bottom of my heart.

I can’t thank you more, and I hope in the near future you’d like to visit Beijing, China. Then, I can try my best to pay you back. I’d like to introduce you to all my family and friends, and I’m hoping to take you to the Great Wall, one of the seven wonders in the world.

I’m looking forward to your reply. Wish you good luck!

Yours,

Li Hua.

Friends come from Netherlands

Last week, our school received and treated friends coming from the Netherland, who were exchange students and teachers. During the week, took part in various activities together, which was really great and memorable.

Early on Monday morning, the Netherlands students and teachers arrived and took part in our flag-raising ceremony, during which, I, one of the journalists, made a speech to welcome them on behalf of all the faculty and students.

During the following days, they had a variety of special classes to learn traditional Chinese culture. The most impressive is an art class. From this class, they learnt a lot about Chinese characters and were taught to write Chinese characters under the guidance of the art teacher. Besides, they also learnt about Peking opera from the art teachers, and made Peking opera make-ups as well. During the classes, they always listened carefully with big ears and an open mouth. And they couldn’t wait to raise their hands with a smiling face when they were asked to answer some questions or share their feelings.

On Wednesday, they were taken to the Forbidden City for a visit where they were shocked at the wisdom of the ancient Chinese that they took enormous pictures as memory. During the visit, they listened to the guide attentively, asking questions and making comments. When asked about their feelings and gains, they always put their thumbs up and told me it was a terrific trip and there was admiration in their eyes.

Time flew, we had to say goodbye to each other. On the very day of departure, we gave them Chinese knots as a gift, expressing our miss and love for each other.
