One day, King Li of the State of Chu announced to the people: If any emergency occurs in our country, the drum will be beaten as a signal. The moment the people hear the drum, they must assemble outside the palace gate at once.

One day, King Li out drunk, when he passed by the drum stand, he started to beat the drum at random. When the people heard the drum, they ran from all directions to the palace gate, thinking that some emergency had occurred in the country. They stood all around in a dense mass.

King Li sent someone to tell them:”Just now the King beat the drum, but nothing urgent had happened, it was only because the King got drunk and when he passed by the drum stand, he beat the drum just for fun.”

All the people returned to their homes , feeling angry.

A few months later, some emergency really occurred in the State of Chu. The drum outside the palace gate sounded from early morning until night. Though the people heard the drum, they no longer cared about it and didn’t rush to the palace gate.

The doctor looked at his patient’s tongue, felt his pulse, knocked on his chest, and began: “Same old story, my friend. Too much confinement. Do not deny it. What you need is plenty of outdoor exercise. Walk, Walk.”

“But, doctor...”

“Don’t argue with me. I am the doctor. Take my advice. Walk ten times as much as you do now. That’s the only thing that will cure you.”

“But my business...”

“That is just the trouble. Your business! Well, change your business, so that you can get a chance to walk more. What is your business?”

“I’m a letter-carrier.”

Years ago while attending a dinner party hosted by some friends of mine the hostess served a meal with this delicious mushroom sauce. After the meal there was a small amount left over and the hostess decided to allow her pregnant cat to enjoy the treat as well as the guests. The guests all felt it was a great gesture and showed the cat was a member of the family.

The sauce was the highlight of the evening’s topic of conversation, everyone commented on how delicious it was, and the hostess beamed at all the compliments. One of the guest commented that toadstools were much like mushrooms except for being toxic, and how funny it would be if such a culinary treat were made from that instead.

As if on cue, the pet cat started crying and squirming on the floor, clutching its belly. The hostess exclaimed,“Oh my God, it’s the mushroom sauce!”

We all went to the emergency room in a mad rush, and had our stomachers pumped after telling them we had eaten poisonous mushrooms. This was an extremely unpleasant experience.

We got back, the cat was lying on the floor peacefully looking up at us, and had given birth to kittens.
