羅布要解釋一個短語,他認為這個短語適用於他本人,但是菲菲有另一種用法。請收聽本期節目,學習這個英語短語的用法。Note: This is not a word-for-word transcript.
注:音訊與文字並不完全對應。Feifei: Hello, this is The English We Speak with me Feifei...
菲菲:大家好,歡迎收聽地道英語節目,我是菲菲。
Rob: And me Rob. Hello!
羅布:還有我羅布。大家好!Feifei: So Rob, what's that thing you've got there?
菲菲:羅布,你拿的是什麼?Rob: Oh this? It's a barrel [tapping on wooden barrel]...
羅布:這個嗎?這是個桶(在木桶上敲擊……)Feifei: A barrel?! I see.
菲菲:桶?!我知道了。Rob: Yeap. And do you want to know what's inside the barrel?
羅布:你想知道里面有什麼嗎?Feifei: Not really.
菲菲:不太想。Rob: OK — well, if I just open the lid here you'll be able to hear [Opens lid and sounds of laughing] — funny, isn't it?!
羅布:嗯,如果我把蓋子開啟,你就能聽到了(開啟蓋子,有笑聲)很有意思,不是嗎?Feifei: [not impressed] You have 'a barrel of laughs' — hmm, and that is supposed to be funny?
菲菲:(不以為然)你有一個會發出笑聲的桶,這就搞笑嗎?Rob: Yes, it is. It's supposed to illustrate today's piece of authentic real English. It's hilarious, isn't it? And do you know what — the phrase 'a barrel of laughs' can be used to describe me — someone who is fun and always joking around.
羅布:對啊。這可以解釋今天要學的地道英語表達。很有趣,不是嗎?你知道a barrel of laughs這個短語可以用來形容我這種風趣又喜歡開玩笑的人嗎?Feifei: Really? Someone who is funny is 'a barrel of laughs'? But this doesn't describe you Rob — you're not funny.
菲菲:真的嗎?某個人很有趣可以用這個短語形容?不過這並不能用來描述你,羅布,你並不搞笑。Rob: Oh? What?! I think we'd better hear some examples of this phrase in action — and I'll show you how funny I really am...
羅布:哦?什麼?!我想我們最好先來聽聽這個短語的用法,然後我會向你證明我是多搞笑的一個人……Examples
例句I shall miss having John in the office. He was a such a barrel of laughs.
我會懷念約翰在辦公室的時間的。他真的很有意思。What a barrel of laughs that bus driver was. He made the long journey much more fun with his funny announcements!
那名公交車司機真是太搞笑了。他用幽默的言談讓長途旅行更有樂趣!Since I split up with my boyfriend, life hasn't been a barrel of laughs.
我和男朋友分手以後,我的生活裡就沒有了歡笑。Feifei: So if someone is a 'barrel of laughs', they are fun — and an enjoyable person to be around.
菲菲:如果這個短語用來形容人,就表示他們是風趣、令人愉快的人。Rob: Yeah, exactly— the phrase can also describe a thing such as TV show. But come on Feifei, you have to agree, this barrel full of laughs is so funny! Listen to this! [Opens lid again: laughter].
羅布:沒錯,這個短語也可以用來描述一件事,比如說電視節目。不過菲菲,你得承認,這個裝滿笑聲的桶非常搞笑!聽聽這個!(再次開啟蓋子:笑聲)Feifei: Hmm, it's a cheap joke but it's not funny. I know what you can do if you want to make me laugh...
菲菲:嗯,這是個庸俗的笑話,而且也沒有意思。我知道如果你想讓我笑可以做什麼……Rob: Oh yes — go on, what is it?
羅布:哦,繼續說,是什麼?Feifei: Why don't you see if you can fit inside the barrel?
菲菲:為什麼你不試試能不能進桶裡去呢?Rob: Oh, right, OK. Well, that sounds like a laugh. OK, then, here goes... [Sound of Rob getting in] ... Alright, I'm in.
羅布:哦,好。這聽起來很好玩。好,我來試試……(羅布進桶裡的聲音)好了,我進來了。Feifei: Wow Rob — you actually fit in the barrel! That's so funny!
菲菲:哇,羅布,你真的進到了桶裡!這太搞笑了!Rob: Hey Feifei what are you doing?
羅布:嘿,菲菲,你在做什麼?Feifei: Making you into a real life 'barrel of laughs'.
菲菲:讓你進入現實生活中的“笑聲之桶”裡。Rob: That's not funny.
羅布:這可不好玩。Feifei: It's hilarious! See you later.
菲菲:這太有意思了!再見。
