【場景】Caroline向Hwang（追債人）詢問了Han的欠債情況，並想通過分期方式支付，聽到Hwang說出了3萬美元后，Caroline跟Max都對“Han在女子網球上輸了3萬”表示吃驚。而一旁的Han趕緊岔開話題，想用另種方式還上欠款。

【講解】

figure sth/sb out vt. 算出；想出；解決；理解；斷定。

擴展settle（解決問題，糾紛），solve（解決問題，困難），figure out（好好的思考以理解）。

settle 指排除猶豫、懷疑和爭論之後作出明確的最終結論。

solve 普通用詞，含義廣，指爲有一定難度的問題找到滿意的解法或答覆。

【例句】

He's trying to figure out a way to solve the problem.

他正在努力想辦法解決這個問題。

I can't figure out why he did it.

我弄不明白他爲什麼要那麼做。

【講解】

on the shelf = not noticed or not used 被忽視的；被擱置的；廢棄的。

be on the shelf 束之高閣，廢棄的。

mainly UK informal（通常指女子）年齡太大而找不到對象的。
