Describe a wedding

Task:

Describe a wedding you attended

You should say:

whose wedding it was

who was there

where it was

and explain how you felt at this wedding.

Sample answer:

One of my cousins got married and had a magnificent(華麗的) celebration. Nearly 100 hundred relatives and friends attended it and I was there all along the way.

There are many steps to follow during a typical Chinese wedding, like both families cover any manholes, drains or wells nearby the houses with red paper as a local tradition. But I always find most interesting the part of how the groom win his way to his lover.

The wedding ceremony was on the national day last nd 9 am, we, as the groom family, set a fleet of cars towards the bride house. When we arrive at the brides house, the groom, along with his parents, cousins, aunts and uncles, went to the brides door. The groom knocked the door several times, calling out for his wife, but the bride's mother won’t not open it until the groom calls, "Mama" and paid the bride's mother some money.

Even then, the bride remained locked in her room with the bride's maids. The maids demanded the groom proved his love before they would open the door. This included singing correctly some ordered romantic songs, and some were tricky. My cousin was not a pop song lover, so it was time to display my music skills. My try was passed as OK, thankfully. Eventually the bride came out and the groom lifted her up into the waiting car during everyone’s applause.

In the weddings I have attended, there have been a few Western elements, like white gowns and wedding vows, but overall, I would characterize the weddings as very much Chinese in both form and style. It is a mix of tradition, spectacle, prestige, showing off, and romance all in one.

1.A wedding is a ceremony where two people are united in marriage. Wedding traditions and customs(習慣)vary greatly between cultures, ethnic groups(民族), religions, countries, and social classes. Most wedding ceremonies involve an exchange of wedding vows(誓言) by the couple, presentation of a gift (offering, ring(s), symbolic(象徵性)item, flowers, money), and a public proclamation(宣告) of marriage by an authority figure. Special wedding garments(服裝)are often worn, and the ceremony is sometimes followed by a wedding reception. Music, poetry, prayers or readings from religious texts or literature are also commonly incorporated into the ceremony.

use of a wedding ring has long been part of religious weddings in Europe and America, but the origin of the tradition is unclear. One possibility is the Roman belief in the Vena Amoris, which was believed to be a blood vessel that ran from the fourth finger (ring finger) directly to the heart, thus when a couple wore rings on this finger their hearts were connected. Historian Vicki Howard points out that the belief in the "ancient" quality of the practice is most likely a modern invention. "Double ring" ceremonies are also a modern practice, a groom's wedding band not appearing in the United States until the early 20th century.

wedding ceremony is often followed by wedding reception or a wedding breakfast, in which the rituals may include speeches from the groom, best man(伴郎), father of the bride and possibly the bride, the newlyweds' first dance as a couple, and the cutting of an elegant(漂亮的) wedding cake.

What you did there(你做了些什麼)

and explain why you think it was successful(你認爲婚禮舉辦成功的原因) 在雅思口語考試的機經題庫中,以wedding爲主題的問題分別出現在了第一部分和第二部分,在第一部分中,題庫中的考題有,What’s the typical Chinese wedding like- What do people usually wear in the wedding- ?

I think the most romantic part was the time when the newlyweds were taking the wedding vows. The groom said to the bride, “I love three things in the world, the sun, the moon and you, the sun for the day, the moon for the night and you forever.” And the bride said to the groom, “To the world, you might be just one person, but to me, you are my whole world.” Those words touched everybody’s heart.

One of my best friend Wayne got married in October 2015. The ceremony was held in a luxury hotel in Fengtai District. I drove to the place in about 9:00 am, met with several of our mutual friends, left the present and got seated. The ceremony was generally Chinese style but without annoying cliché. I heard that the bride wanted to get married in a church, but since Wayne is not religious, they chose a Hotel.

The band was nice, the ceremony master was professional, neither too chatty nor too sharp. There were over 300 people at the wedding, I guess since Wayne has quite a social network out there. I only knew, like, 20 of them, since those are our mutual friends from middle school. I watched him take the oath and kissed the bride, thinking about the word “an end of an era”.

There are no such things as bachelor parties in China, but Wayne did invite me for a drink two days before the Big day and we got totally wasted lol. And just as I expected, he brought up Maggie and asked if I were coming to the wedding with her.

Long story short, Maggie was my first love as well as his best friend from childhood. Our competition, as well as friendship, originated from our affection for the girl. Wayne somehow quit when we were in college, so I have been the only one still seeking the answer from Mag. Anyway, I did contact her but she didn’t want to come. So Wayne made fun of me for that at the wedding, I mocked back “Hey, have you ever noticed that your trophy wife looks a loooooot like HER” and we both got punched in the shoulder by each other.

After all, he is my best friend. Whatever choices he has made, I would support him and wish him the best. Maybe it’s also a time for me to move on.
