A

A new study has found that social media could be having effects on the sleep of young adults.

They found that young people who often use social media are more likely to suffer from sleep disorders than those who use social media less.

The researchers set out to examine the connection between social media use and sleep among young adults. Levenson, who led the study, noticed that these young adults are possibly the first "generation to grow up with social media."

The researchers wanted to find out how often young people used social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Histogram, etc. For the study, they gave questionnaires to nearly 1,800 adults, aged 19 to 32. On average, members of the study group used social media sites one hour a day. They also "visited various social media accounts 30 times per week."

Thirty percent of the study's participants(參與者) reported having serious problems with sleeping. Those people who used social media a lot were three times more likely to have a sleep disorder. And those who spent the most time on social media were two times as likely to suffer from sleep disorders.

Levenson said the number of times a person visits social media is a better predictor(預測) of sleep problems than overall time spent on social media. If this is true, she adds, then practices that stop such behaviors may be most effective.

Do you usually go Dutch(AA制) when you take someone out to dinner? Do you expect your date to pay for the whole meal?

Many people say that as long as there's love, money doesn't matter much. But this might change when the relationship gets serious and it is related to the money borrowed from the bank, the family present accounts and debt.

A survey among 8 million couples in the UK suggested that 44% of married couples don't know exactly what their partner earns. An astonishing 23% actively try to keep their finances(資金) secret from their partners. About 38% of them are open to each other. Another 12% refuses to tell the truth.

British relationship expert Russell says: "It’s very difficult to talk about money. Often there’s guilt, there’s shame. To start those conversations is difficult. Money can be about how we value ourselves, how we feel valued. It’s not just a simple case of talking about hard cash."

So if you are in a couple, it might be a good idea to check if you both are on the same page about money before bills pile up on the kitchen table and love flies out of the window. When moving in together, couples should not only talk about their personal habits but also about their financial ones.

Russell has a word of advice: "Accept the fact that in your relationship you might do money differently – there might be a spender or a saver. It’s very attractive if your partner does things differently to say they’re wrong. Do it differently but plan it well."

And now, back to that date. Would you be bored with someone who was attractive but expected you to pay the bill by yourself? There's food for thought.

32. How many people are very careful not to let their partner know their income?

A. About 3.5 million. B. About 3 million.

C. About 1.9 million. D. About 0.96 million.

33. When they have to tell their partner they don't earn much money, some people might feel

__________.

A. ashamed B. frightened C. pleased D. tired

34. According to relationship expert Russell, what should people do no matter whether they are savers or spenders?

A. They should value themselves about spending money.

B. They should have a plan about money.

C. They should talk more about their personal spending habits.

D. They should spend money differently.

35. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

A. Problems from Money B. How to Be Good Couples

C. True Love Means Money D. Love and Money

根據文中第三段的相關數據,尤其是“An astonishing 23% actively try to keep their finances secret from their partners.”

根據第四段裏“Often there’s guilt, there’s shame.” 故ashamed(慚愧的)最合適。Frightened(恐慌的)、 pleased(高興的)、 tired(疲倦的)均不合適。

on the same page “在同一頁上”即“意見一致”。尤其是倒數第二段最後一句話“Do it differently but plan it well.”可知B正確。

35. D 本文所描述的是關於夫妻(couple)間愛情(love )與金錢(money)關係的探討。文中多處出現“love, money, couple, partner, date”等詞語。所以D最適合作爲本篇短文的標題。

第二節 (共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

根據短文內容,從短文後的選項中選出能填人空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項爲多餘選項。

The Atlantic Ocean

The Atlantic Ocean is one of the oceans that separate the Old World from the New. For centuries it kept the America from being discovered by the Europeans.

Many wrong ideas about the Atlantic made early sailors unwilling to sail far out into it. One idea was that it reached out to “the edge of the world.” 36.____________ Another idea was that at the equator(赤道) the ocean would be boiling hot.

There is so much water in the Atlantic that it is hard to imagine how much. 37.____________ For so large an ocean it has few islands. Also, it is the world’s saltiest ocean.

One of the longest mountains of the world rises from the floor of the Atlantic. This mountain runs north and south down the middle of the ocean. 38.______________

Several hundred miles eastward from Florida there is a part of the ocean called the Sargasso the water is quiet, for there is little wind.

39.______________ It is, however, not always a smooth and safe one. Storms sweep across it and pile up great waves. Icebergs float down from the far North across the paths of ships.

We now have such fast ways of traveling that this big ocean seems to have grown smaller Columbus sailed for more than two months to cross it. 40.________________ Airplanes fly from New York to London in only eight hours!

A. Some sailors thought they could land at the other end.

B. Today the Atlantic is a great highway.

C. A fast modern ship can make the trip in less than 4 days.

D. Sailors were afraid that they might sail off the earth.

E. The tops of a few of the mountains reach up above the sea and make islands.

F. Now we can get across the Atlantic much faster than ever

G. Two things make the Atlantic rather unusual.

36. D 根據該空的前一句話“One idea was that it reached out to “the edge of the world.”所以此處是“怕從世界的邊緣駛離地球”。

37. G 根據下文“For so large an ocean it has few islands. Also, it is the world’s saltiest ocean.”

41. B 根據首句“I know little about my grandmother.”

59. B 根據“she’s small”的暗示可知in size“在外形上”最恰當。

My parents once lived in a small village, it was always very quiet. The people lived there were busy working in their fields during the day, and went to bed early at night, tiring after a long day’s hard work. All of them had lived in a village for all their life and have never left for more than one day at a time. On these days they left, they got up early in the morning . They filled their carts by fruit and vegetables and sheeps, and went to the market in the town. They came back in the evening and with some money and perhaps a present for their children. That was their life— hard yet simple, but not happy.

One possible version:

Dear Jack,

Hello! I’ m glad to send you an e-mail to tell you that I ‘m getting more and more interested in English.

However, in the past I thought learning English just meant learning grammar rules and words by heart. I didn’t like to read or speak English , nor was I willing to practice dialogues with my classmates.

Now with my English teacher’s help, I’ve realized we should learn to speak English. I enjoy communicating with my classmates in English. I often read some English news or articles and look up some information on the Internet. As a result, I have made great progress in English.

In future, I will still read and speak more English. I hope I can sometimes talk with you in English online.

(105 words)

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua
