北京是中華人民共和國的首都，也是全國的政治和文化中心。大約70萬年前，北京人(Peking Man)出現在北京西南48公里的周口店地區。十世紀初期，北京成爲遼代(the LiaoDynasty)的第二個都城。從那時起，北京先後成爲金、元、明和清四朝的首都，直至1911年。1949年10月1日，毛主席在北京向全世界宣佈了中華人民共和國的成立。北京人口超過2000萬，大約1000萬人住在城裏，其他人住在郊區。
