  1. suppose 意爲“認爲,猜測”,後常接“賓語+賓語補足語”形式。

① suppose sb./sth. to have done 的結構。

They supposed the paper to have been lost during the war. 他們認爲那個文件在戰爭期間丟失了。

The police arrested him because he was supposed to have killed the lady. 警察逮捕了他,認爲他殺死了那位女士。

② suppose sb./sth. (to be) +形容詞 / 介詞短語的結構。

Everyone supposes him (to be) poor, but he is really quite wealthy. 大家都認爲他很窮,實際上很很闊。

She was supposed to be an excellent student in our school. 她被認爲是我校優秀的學生。

③ suppose + it +形容詞 / 名詞+ to do 的結構。

I suppose it my duty to help those in poverty. 我認爲幫助那些處於貧困中的人是我的義務。

  2. suppose 可用於“ be supposed +不定式”的結構。

① be supposed to do sth. = should do sth. 意爲“應該 / 理應做某事”,表示被期望或被要求(按規則、慣例)做某事。

We are supposed to help each other. 我們理應互相幫助。(要求)

You are supposed to hand in your papers before class is over. 希望你下課前交卷子。(期望)

② be not supposed to do sth. 常用來表示不允許或禁止做某事,表示委婉的禁止。

Students are not supposed to play football in the classroom. 學生不允許在教室裏踢足球。

③ be supposed to have done = should have done = ought to have done 表示“過去本該做某事但實際上未做”。

The train is supposed to have arrived an hour ago. 火車應該在 1 小時前到達。

  3. suppose 可用過去完成時表示“未曾實現的願望”。

We had supposed that we would be able to see more of Shanghai, but time didn't permit. 我們本打算能多看看上海,但時間卻不允許了。

注意:與 suppose 這種用法相同的還有: hope, think, expect, mean, want, intend, plan (一些表示心理狀態的動詞)等。

  4. suppose 可用於“ suppose + that (從句)”句型。

What makes you suppose (that) I'm against it? 你根據什麼認爲我反對這件事?

It was generally supposed that it would not happen again. 一般認爲此事不會再發生。

  5. 由 suppose 引導的賓語從句,如果主句的主語是第一人稱 I 或 we ,並且主句謂語是一般現在時態,從句的否定一般要轉移到主句上來,其反意疑問句一般與賓語從句一致。

I don't suppose for a minute that he'll agree. 我認爲他決不同意。

We don't suppose they will say sorry to her, will they? 我們認爲他們不會對她說對不起,是吧?

注意:與 suppose 這種用法相同的還有: think, believe, imagine, expect 等。

  6. suppose 可用於簡略答語中,用 so 代替一個肯定的賓語從句;用 not 代替一個否定的賓語從句。

— Do you suppose he'll fail to catch the train?

—你認爲他會錯過火車嗎?

— I suppose so./ I suppose not. (= I don't suppose so. )

—我想會的。 / 我想不會。

注意:與 suppose 這種用法相同的還有: think, believe, expect, imagine 等。但應注意 hope 和 be afraid 則不同於以上的用法。

— Will he win the game?

— Yes, I hope so./No, I hope not. (不能用 I don't hope so. )

  7. suppose 可用於插入語中。

① do you suppose 用作插入語,用來徵詢對方對某事的看法,常放在疑問詞的後面,並且句子要用陳述語序。

What do you suppose made her so angry? 你認爲什麼事使她如此生氣?

When do you suppose we shall begin our class? 你認爲我們什麼時候開始上課?

注意:與 suppose 這種用法相同的還有: believe, expect, think, imagine, guess 等。

② I suppose 也可用作插入語,表示說話者的態度或看法,常用於句中或句末。

You don't mind my smoking, I suppose? 我想你不會介意我抽菸吧?

She'll be there today, I suppose. 我想她今天能到那兒去。

  8. suppose ( = supposing) 可引導條件狀語從句,意爲“如果,假如”。

Suppose ( = Supposing) he is absent, what shall we do? 假如他缺席,我們怎麼辦?

注意:如果想表示“即使”,應用 supposing 而不用 suppose 。

Supposing you miss him, he is not likely to miss you. 即使你碰不到他,他也可能碰到你。

  9. suppose 用來表示建議,常用在祈使句中,意爲“……怎麼樣”。
