張信哲出身於宗教家庭，自小即過音樂生活，其父爲牧師，由於天天聽教會聖詩班練合唱曲，張信哲三、四歲左右就會唱合唱曲的每一部。

國中時期由於成績差，高中聯考失敗，但張信哲並沒有因此而放棄課業，反而參加五專聯考，並得到最高分，憑五專聯考漂亮的成績單考進嘉義協同高中。在高中開放式教育環境中，學校給予學生充分的自由空間，同時也啓發了張信哲對藝術認知的領域。

大學時期，張信哲考進基督書院英文系，學校容許學生舉辦各種活動，而張信哲也因爲在音樂方面有所擅長，不但負責學生的音樂組，還帶合唱團，舉行音樂比賽，成爲學校的風雲人物。大二那年，張信哲在比賽中演唱了Understanding Heart，並榮獲第一名，歌聲震驚擔任評審的名詞曲創作人丁曉雯和鄭華娟，隨後鄭華娟將張信哲推薦給滾石唱片，後與巨石簽約。
