《新概念英語》第二冊第44:Through the forest穿過森林

【課文】
First listen and then answer the question.
聽錄音，然後回答以下問題。
How did Mrs. Sterling get her bag back?

Mrs. Anne Sterling did not think of the risk she was taking when she ran through a forest after two men. They had rushed up to her while she was having a picnic at the edge of a forest with her children and tried to steal her handbag. In the struggle, the strap broke and, with the bag in their possession, both men started running through the trees. Mrs. Sterling got so angry that she ran after them. She was soon out of breath, but she continued to run. When she caught up with them, she saw that they had sat down and were going through the contents of the bag, so she ran straight at them. The men got such a fright that they dropped the bag and ran away. 'The strap needs mending,' said Mrs. Sterling later, 'but they did not steal anything.'

【課文翻譯】
安.斯特林夫人在穿過森林追趕兩個男人時，她並沒有考慮到所冒的風險。剛纔，當她和孩子們正在森林邊上野餐的時候，這兩個人衝到她跟前，企圖搶走她的手提 包。在爭搶中，手提包的帶斷了，包落入這兩個人手裏，他們拔腿跑進了樹林。斯特林夫人非常氣憤，向着他們追了過去。只追了一會兒便上氣不接下氣了，但她還是繼續追趕。當她趕上他們時，發現他們已經坐了下來，正翻着包裏的東西。於是她直衝過去。這兩個人嚇了一跳，扔下提包逃跑了。“這提包帶需要修理，”斯特 林夫人事後說道，“不過他們什麼也沒偷走。”

【知識點講解】
1 She was soon out of breath, but she continued to run.
只追了一會兒便上氣不接下氣了，但她還是繼續追趕。

（1）breath n. 呼吸,動詞形式是breathe
與breath搭配的短語有：
out of breath:上氣不接下氣
waste one's breath;白費口舌
in one breath:片刻
Hold one's breath:屏住呼吸

She was out of breath from climbing the stairs.
爬樓梯使她上氣不接下氣的。

Hold your breath for a few seconds.
屏息幾秒鐘。

Several students made the request in one breath.
好幾個學生同時提出這個要求。

（2）continue一般後面常接不定式，比較普遍，而很少用現在分詞。不過在作及物動詞時，把現在分詞看做動名詞也是可以的。continue後面接不定式或者現在分詞，都解釋爲“不停地……”而不是“停止後繼續……”的意思。

The baby continued to cry all night.
這個嬰兒一晚上都在哭。
注:句子不可改爲The baby continued to cry (或 crying) at eleven o'clock。

2 Mrs. Anne Sterling did not think of the risk she was taking when she ran through a forest after two men.
安.斯特林夫人在穿過森林追趕兩個男人時，她並沒有考慮到所冒的風險。

risk做名詞時，表示“危險, 風險, 投資報酬的風險”做動詞時表示“冒 ... 的危險, 承受...的風險”
常搭配的短語有：at risk處境危險 at the risk of 冒着 ... 的危險 at any risk 冒着一切危險

The disease is spreading, and all young children are at risk.
疾病正在流行，所有的幼兒都有危險。

He saved my life at the risk of his own.
他冒着自己的生命危險救了我的命。

The investor is not willing to risk the money in any investment.
投資者不願承受將這筆錢用於投資的風險。

3 In the struggle, the strap broke and, with the bag in their possession, both men started running through the trees.
在爭搶中，手提包的帶斷了，包落入這兩個人手裏，他們拔腿跑進了樹林。

（1）struggle vi. 努力, 奮鬥, 鬥爭, 掙扎 n. 鬥爭, 競爭, 奮鬥
常見搭配短語有：struggle for 爲 ... 努力          struggle against 同 ... 作鬥爭            struggle with 與 ... 鬥爭        struggle on 掙扎下去

He struggled to control his temper.
他努力控制住自己的脾氣。

His struggle with adversity is fruitless.
他徒與不幸掙扎而毫無結果。

As the parents had five children, life was a perpetual struggle against poverty.
由於父母已經有了五個孩子，生活就是同貧困作無止境的搏鬥。

（2） in possession of 意思爲“控制、擁有”
possession是名詞n. 擁有, 財產, 所有, 殖民地，其它搭配的短語還有：take possession of 佔有, 佔領

He was found in possession of dangerous drugs.
她被發現藏有危險物品。

He took possession of the house.
這個房子歸他所有。

4 When she caught up with them, she saw that they had sat down and were going through the contents of the bag, so she ran straight at them.
當她趕上他們時，發現他們已經坐了下來，正翻着包裏的東西。

content   adj. 滿足的, 滿意的   vt. 使 ... 滿足, 使 ... 安心

（1）content指“容量”，contents指“內容”。表示一篇文章或一本書的“內容”應用content。

The essay is excellent both in form and in content.
這篇論文在格式和內容上都很優秀。

Teaching content should be concise.
教學內容要少而精。

（2）be content with 對……表示滿意

I'm quite content with the offer you have made.
我對你剛提出的建議很滿意。
