I feel that this award was not made to me as a man, but to my work,a life’s work in the agony and sweat of the human spirit, not for glory and least of all for profit, but to create out of the materials of the human spirit something which did not exist this award is only mine in trust. It will not be diffcult to find a dedication for the money part of it commensurate with the purpose and significance of its I would like to do the same with the acclaim too,

by using this moment as a pinnacle from which I might be listened to by the young men and women already dedicated to the same anguish and travail, among whom is already that one who will some day stand here whereI am standing.

Our tragedy today is a general and universal physical fear so long sustained by now that we can even bear it. There are no longer problems of the spirit. There is only the question: When will I be blown up? Because of this, the young man or woman writing today has forgotten the problems of the human heart in conflictwith itself which alone can make good writing because only that is worth writing about, worth the agony and the sweat. He must learn them again.

He must teach himself that the basest of all things is to be afraid; and, teaching himself that, forget itforever, leaving no room in his workshop for anything but the old verities and truths of the heart, the old universal truths lacking which any story is ephemeral and doomed, love and honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice. Until he does so, he labors under a curse. He writes not of love but of lust, ofdefeats in which nobody loses anything of value, of victories whthout hope and, worst of all, without pityor griefs grieve on no universal bones, leaving no scars. He writes not of the heart but ofthe glands.

Until he relearns these things, he will write as though he stood among and watched the end of man. I decline to accept the end of man. It is easy enough to say that man is immortal simply because he will endure: that when the last ding-dong of doom has clanged and faded from the last worthless rock hanging tideless in the last red and dying evening, that even then there will still be one more sound: that of his puny inexhaustible voice, still talking. I refuse to accept this. I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrfice and endurance.

The poet’s, the writer’s duty is to write about these things. It is his privilege to help man endure by lifting his heart, by reminding him of the courage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice which have been the glory of his past. The poet’s voice need not merely be the record of man,it can be one of the props, the pillars to help him endure and prevail.

Most Americans have great vigor and prefer to discipline themselves rather than be disciplined by pride themselves on their independence, their right to make up their own are prepared to take the initiative, even when there is a risk in doing so. They have courage and do not give in will take any sort of job anywhere rather than be do not care to be looked after by the average American changes his or her job nine or ten times during his or her working life.

Americans have a warmth and friendliness which is less superficial than many foreigners are considered sentimental. When on ceremonial occasions they see a flag,or attend parades celebrating America’ glorious past, tears may come to their ions with family and friends tend to be emotional, like to dress correctly, even if “correctly” means love to boast, though often with tongue in can laugh at themselves and their country, and they can be very self-critical,while remaining always intensely patriotic. They have a wide knowledge of everyday things, and a keen interest in their particular city and state. Foreigners sometimes complain, however, that they have little interest inor knowledge of the outside world.

The Americans have a passion for grandeur. Their skyscrapers, bridges and dams often have a splendor whichmatches in beauty and scale the country’s natural the sole aim of most Americans to make moneyand possess luxuries which could be called excessive? The majority of Americans would certainly deny this, though most feel proud to amass wealth and possessions through hard the USA, about 90% of the population is well enough off to expect a brighter future. The USA still has one of the highest standards of living in the world, although,at the present time, 10% are below what the Government considers to be the “poverty line.”While these underprivileged people receive help from the Government, they have no high hopes for their is from this “underclass,”and those who take advantage of it, that most of the violence springs, which is one of the least pleasant aspects of American icans are beginning to realize that this terrible problem of poverty is their problem and not just the Government’ has been saidthat the individual American is generous, but that the American nation is hard.

The USA is reputed to be a classless e is certainly not much social snobbery or job manual worker is usually quite at ease in any is partly explained by the fact that people of all income groups go together to the same icans are far more race-conscious than they are class-conscious.

All the wisdom of the ages, all the stories that have delighted mankind for centuries, are easily and cheaply available to all of us within the covers of books but we must know how to avail ourselves of this treasure and how to get the most from most unfortunate people in the world are those who have never discovered how satisfying it is to read good books.

I am most interested in people, in them and finding out about of the most remarkable people I’ve met existed only in a writer’s imagination, then on the pages of his book, and then, again, in my imagination.I’ve found in books new friends, new societies, new words.

If I am interested in people, others are interested not so much in who as in in the books includeseverybody from science fiction superman two hundred centuries in the future all the way back to the first figures in covers everything from the ingenious explanations of Sherlock Holmes to the discoveries of science and ways of teaching manner to children.

Reading is pleasure of the mind, which means that it is a little like a sport:your eagerness and knowledgeand quickness make you a good reader. Reading is fun,not because the writer is telling you something, but because it makes your mind own imagination works along with the author’s or even goes beyond experience, compared with his, brings you to the same or different conclusions, and your ideas develop as you understand his.

Every book stands by itself, like a one-family house, but books in a library are like houses in a city. Although they are separate, together they all add up to something, they are connected with each other and with other same ideas, or related ones, turn up in different places;the human problems that repeatthemselves in life repeat themselves in literature, but with different solutions according to different writings at different s influence each other; they link the past, the present and the future and have their own generations, like ever you start reading you connect yourself with one of the families of ideas, and in the long run,you not only find out about the world and the people in it; you find out about yourself, too.

Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. If you concentrate on books somebody tells you you “ought”to read, you probably won’t have fun. But if you put down a book you don’t like and try another till you find one that means something to you, and then relax with it, you will almost certainly have a good tim and if you become, as a result of reading, better, wiser, kinder, or more gentle, you won’t have suffered during the process.
