(一)

The fox and the goat

An unlucky fox fell into a well. It was quite deep, so he could not get out by himself..

A goat passed by. He asked the fox what he was doing in the well. "Oh, have you not heard?" said the fox. "There is going to be a great drought, so I jumped down to get some water. Why don’t you come down here too?"

The goat believed his words, and jumped down into the well.

But the fox immediately jumped on the goat’s back and up to the edge of the well. "Good-bye, friend," said the fox. "Remember next time don’t trust the advice of a man in difficulties."

●一隻不走運的狐狸,失足掉到了井裏。井很深,他無法跳出來。

●一隻山羊經過這裏,便問狐狸在井下做什麼。狐狸說:“哦,你沒有聽說嗎?這裏將要大旱,因此我跳進來取水,爲什麼你不下來一起喝呢?”

●山羊相信了狐狸的話,就真的跳進井裏。狐狸立即跳上山羊的背,又一跳,跳上了井沿。

●“再見,朋友,”狐狸說,“記住,不要相信一個身陷麻煩的人的建議。”

寓意: 處於困境之中的人爲了擺脫困境,往往不惜犧牲別人的利益,所以他們的建議常常是不可信的。

(二)

The wolf and the crane

When a wolf was eating an animal, a small bone from the meat got stuck in his throat. He could not swallow it, so he felt a terrible pain.

He ran up and down, and tried to find something to relieve the pain.

He tried to convince anyone to remove the bone. "I would give anything," he said, "if you would take it out."

At last the crane agreed to try. It told the wolf to open his mouth, and then put its long neck down the wolf’s throat.

The crane loosened the bone with its beak, and finally got it out.

"Will you kindly give me the reward?" asked the crane.

The wolf showed his teeth, and said, "Be content,you have put your head into a wolf’s mouth and taken it out again in safety. That is a great reward for you."

●狼吃東西的時候,肉裏的一小塊骨頭卡在喉嚨裏,吞不下去,很疼。他四處奔走,想找到什麼辦法減輕痛苦。

●他爲了讓人相信說道:“如果能取出這塊骨頭,我付出什麼都可以。”

●最後,鷺鷥同意試試看,他讓狼張大嘴,然後將長長的脖子伸進狼的喉嚨,用尖嘴叼出骨頭。

The wolf and the lamb

Once upon a time a wolf was lapping at a stream. When he looked up, he saw a lamb drinking a little lower down.

"There’s my supper," he thought. "I will find some excuse to catch it." Then he called out to the lamb, "How dare you muddle the water?" "No, master," said the lamb. "I cannot muddle your water because it runs down from you to me."

"Well, then," said the wolf. "Why did you call me bad names this time last year?" "It was impossible," said the lamb. "I am only six months old."

"I don’t care," shouted the wolf. "If it was not you, it must be your father." After that he rushed at the poor little lamb and ate it up.

●從前,一隻狼在溪流喝水,看到一隻小羊在下游喝水。

●“那是我的晚餐,”狼想,“我要找一個藉口吃掉他。”於是,他惡狠狠地對小羊說:“你怎麼敢攪渾濁了我的水?”“我沒有,先生,”小羊回答說,“我在下游喝水,怎麼能攪渾濁你喝的水呢?”

寓意: 當一個壞人想爲自己所做的壞事尋找藉口時,他不會在乎這個藉口是否恰當。

(二)

The sick lion

A lion had come to the end of his days. He lay helpless under a tree.

The animals came around him. When they saw that he was going to die, they thought to themselves, "Now is the time to pay him back."

So the boar came up and rushed at him with his tusks.

Then a bull gored him with his horns. The lion still lay helpless before them.

So the ass felt quite safe. He turned his tail to the lion and kicked up his heels into his face.

"This is a double death." growled the lion.

●一頭年老體衰的獅子病得有氣無力,奄奄一息地躺在樹下。

●動物們圍在他的周圍,看到獅子快要死了,就來報復他。

●一頭野豬衝到他身旁,狠狠地咬他。

●接着,一頭野牛也用角來頂他,獅子無助地躺在那裏。

●當驢子看到可以對這龐大的野獸爲所欲爲時,也用他的蹄子用力去踢獅子的頭部。這頭快要斷氣的獅子說:“我已勉強忍受了勇者的施暴,但還得含羞忍受你這個小丑的侮辱,真是死不瞑目。

The miser and his gold

Once upon a time there was a miser. He hid his gold under a tree. Every week he used to dig it up.

One night a robber stole all the gold. When the miser came again, he found nothing but an empty hole.

He was surprised, and then burst into the neighbors gathered around him.

He told them how he used to come and visit his gold.

"Did you ever take any of it out?" asked one of them. "No," he said, "I only came to look at it." "Then come again and look at the hole," said the neighbor, "it will be the same as looking at the gold."

守財奴

●從前,有個守財奴將他的金塊埋到一棵樹下,每週他都去把他挖出來看看。

●一天晚上,一個小偷挖走了所有的金塊。 守財奴再來查看時,發現除了一個空洞什麼都沒有了。

(二)

The old man and Death

An old man was gathering sticks in a forest.

At last he grew very tired and hopeless. He threw down all the sticks and cried out, "I cannot bear this life any longer. Ah, I wish Death would come and take me!"

As he spoke, Death appeared, and said to him, "What would you do, old man? I heard you call me."

"Please, sir," replied the old man, "would you help me lift this bundle of sticks up to my shoulder?"

●有個老人在森林中砍了不少柴,十分吃力地挑着走了很遠的路。

●一路上他累極了,實在挑不動了,便扔下柴擔,叫喊起來:“這種日子我受不了了,死神啊,帶我走吧。”
