The Gentle and Tough Taxes on Birth

People always have the tendency to regard government pollcies as either gentle or tough. However, there is always exception. Take the taxes on birth for instance. It is really an incredible combination of both.

Somebody argues that the taxes on birth proclaim to the public what the government wants. That's true. But will the public take birth control without hesitation just because the government wants it? Besides, we can't always count on taxes to reverse people's behavior. The doubled taxes on wine and cigarettes over the past years don't discourage the consumption of them at all, not to mention other luxuries. To a certain degree, drinking and smoking have become more attractive to people as a symbol of financial abilities. How can we expect things to work out better if we simply apply the similar kinds of taxes on birth?

With the taxes on birth policy, the government seems to suggest to people that it is acceptable to have more children, as long as their families can afford the taxes. Thus new challenges to social equality were posed. Rich people can enjoy larger families while poor people are supposed to have fewer children. The rights of giving more births seemed to be entitled to wealthy people under the taxes policy.

Besides, once a child is born, he should be guaranteed the very best his parents could offer. In poor families, wouldn't the children, who are taxed be regarded as burdens by other family members because they've imposed more economic pressures on their families? The tax also directly deprives his or her rights to grow up in a better economic condition while such deprivation to a child in a wealthy family doesn't have much influence at all.

The taxes on birth policy is, after all, gentle to the rich and tough to the poor, especially to the taxed children in poor families. Thus, it is not worth so much recommendation.

黃雯同學在表述中沒有使用第一人稱,也沒有出現如“in my humble opinion,as for me,I don't

An Allegiant Follower of Women' s Rights

Since the time God created Adam and Eve, women and men, with different body structure and distinct characteristics, are regarded as two totally different groups in the world. From that time, our ancestors have never felt suspicious of this established fact. Modern women, however, with highly developed intellect, tend to distrust the truth held for thousands of years. Believe it or not, a friend of mine is such a girl who always pretends to be an allegiant follower of women's rights.

Such things happen that she always goes into raptures at the mere mention of women's rights. She has a big heap of theories of her own to teach those naive girls in the dorm. Though she often extols the virtue of being independent, having no marriage, having no children, or even never trusting men's words, she has never put it into practice up to now. What's more ridiculous, she was propagating her forever-correct ideas last minute, while she is meeting her beloved boyfriend this minute and never tired of meeting those new handsome guys. When we laughed at her for her unworkable theories, she always laughed like a drain, "I love guys, but I don't trust them. What I am doing is to earn the same opportunity of having fun of love as men always do,"she added every time, "experience is the best way to protect yourself from those bad guys!" This doesn't surprise me any more for the real equality with men is not like this.

In my opinion, real advocators of women rights never deliberately set out to draw attention to themselves. They disregard those old social rules of women and men without being aware that they've really done something to bridge the inequality with men. Compared with those women like who has been mentioned above, they have a strong inner desire to pursue the same opportunity as men have. Unlike girls who lay great emphasis on taking advantage of cosmetics and fashionable dressing, they spent much more time in learning, reading and perfecting 've been conscious that without a perfect performance capability and advanced skills in the field of what they are working, the equal opportunities won't fall down from the heaven. Besides this, they also involve themselves in such activities as discussions, seminars, forums and mass media to make the society and men know them well. This, with no doubt, is an effective way to better women's social status and narrow the gap between men and women.

Nowadays, "women's rights" becomes a fashionable term for women. While all women are talking about their ideas loudly hoping to stand themselves out from others, only a few of them have really done something to pave the way to the "equal world". In my opinion, they are actually the pioneers of our world and are worth being respected.

Can Equality Come Overnight

Women seemed to be the least important creatures in the world in ancient times. At that time the criterion whether a woman is good or not is obedience. A woman was to be obedient to her parents in her youth, to her husband once she got married and to her children in her old age. At that time, women were subordinate to men, having no humanity at all, not to mention the so-called liberty or equality.

As time goes by, tremendous changes have happened to women's status, from women being permitted to receive education together with men to being able to go out to work in the society. Nowadays, such cases are ordinary that women compete with men, work with men, and even take the en's status arrives at an unprecedented high level, which can be called as equality to some extent.

However, the situation is not so optimistic as the majority of women think. In effect, women are far from equal to ally, men's superiority is inveterate, which can't be shaken overnight. Though the society keeps on saying women should be treated equally as men, the idea that men are better than women still exerts a subtle influence on people's minds. When opening newspapers, how many "only men are eligible" are there in advertisements for employees? That is the reality. People tend to value men, not women, at least subconsciously, men are superi

I don't think the concept is based on science. It can't be denied that men take a dominant position in strength, logical thinking etc., but there are characteristic advantages women have anyhow, in which men fail to contend with them. Consequently, men are no better than women. Policewomen, women pilots, and women astronauts.., all these will prove the ability women own to the public. As a result, women get more and more aware of their own values. Despite its hardships and high costs, lots of

them are trying their best to change the prejudice of the society.

However, what I want to point out here is that not only men have the prejudice, but some women themselves do too. Eyen those who claim to long for equality with men have the double standard of equality. On one hand, they demand equal opportunity; on the other hand, they take "lady first" for granted, considering that it is perfectly justified for men to open door for them, offer their own seats to them, pay for dinner for it make sense? How can you ask others to treat you equally while you yourself have admitted the inequality in advance?

In short, I think as long as our sense doesn't completely change, the real equality between men and women won't come.
