英語是一門“活的”語言。從最早的英文詩歌《貝奧武甫》算起，英語已經有1000多歲高齡。就像生物進行新陳代謝一樣，就算到了今天，英語也一直在吸收新詞，淘汰老舊用法。
Cliché(英式讀音[ˈkliːʃeɪ]，美式讀音[klɪˈʃeɪ])就是其中一種正在被淘汰的用法。這種用法在過去可能非常新穎，但由於用的人太多，到今天已經變成了陳腔濫調。
不幸的是，對於英語學習者來説，每個詞句都是嶄新的，我們沒法感受cliché的陳腐。所以最好的解決辦法就是對下列常見cliché敬而遠之。

Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
不要使用你在別的出版物裏見過的暗喻、明喻等比喻手法。
