【講解】

鹽(salt〉在古時是十分珍貴之物。除用於調味和防腐之外,希臘人、羅馬人和猶太人還用於祭祀。鹽素來被視作聖潔的象徵。中世紀英國的王公貴族及一般富有人家都將鹽裝在一個精美的銀製大鹽罐內。按當時習俗鹽罐擺在長方餐桌中間，同桌的貴客坐在離主人最近的席位上，即坐在鹽罐上首,此所謂above the salt。其反義語即 below the salt,這 兩個成語多與動詞sit連用。
