此語出自莎士比亞的《麥克白斯》的笫二幕第二場中麥克白斯的話：“But wherefore could not I pronounce‘ Amen ’? I had most need of blessing, and‘Amen’stuck in my throat. ”（可是我爲什麼說不出‘阿門’這個詞呢？我纔是最需要上帝恩惠，可是‘阿門’這詞卻哽在我的喉頭。）
