看美劇學口語：我們爲什麼要閱讀？

每逢假期到來，隨之而來的就是做不完的作業，有一部分同學會抓緊利用這個空檔來閱讀課外書籍，另一部分同學則是被老師要求閱讀課外書籍，怎樣逃避閱讀書籍的時間，並且還能在開學之後回答老師的提問呢？查理布朗的朋友Patty就遇到了這個問題，於是她向查理布朗求助。

Patty: Guess what, Chuck. Disaster time.

你猜怎麼着，查克（Chair的暱稱），大難臨頭了。

Our teacher wants us to read a book during Christmas vacation.

我們老師要求我們在聖誕假期裏閱讀一本書。

Got any suggestions?

你有什麼建議嗎？

Chair Brown: On what book to read?

關於讀什麼書嗎？

Patty: No. On how to get out of it.

不是，是關於怎樣不讀。

Disaster time災難時刻

在口語中很好使用，常用在一個糟糕的時刻，無論是你被佈置了太多的作業時，還是被老媽要求做家務的時候，你都可以用disaster time來表達你糟透了的感覺。

Got any suggestions？你有什麼建議嗎？

向別人尋求幫助時比較隨意的表達方式，相對錶委婉，也可以更簡略地說成any suggestions？比較完整的表達方式可以是Do you have any suggestions?而What suggestion do you have?就相對更正式一些。

Patty: I’m not going to have to read a book, Marcie.

我不用讀課外書了，瑪茜

See, A Tale of Two Cities was just on TV.

你看，電視上正在放《雙城記》。

I watched the movie, so now I won’t have to read the book.

我看過電影后，現在就不用再去看書了。

The only thing I didn’t understand were the parts about the shampoo, the soap and the coffee.

只有一件事我不明白，就是電影裏關於洗髮精、肥皂和咖啡的部分。

Marcie: Those were the commercials, sir.

那些是商業廣告，小子。

這裏比較有趣的表達方式在Marcie對Patty的稱呼，sir。Patty明明是女生，而死黨Marcie卻稱呼她爲sir。一方面因爲Patty本人就很假小子，運動神經超發達，作風行爲也更像男孩子，所以她的閨蜜自然稱呼她sir也就沒有問題了。同時sir本身也是對男性的尊稱，可以理解爲“先生，閣下”的意思，沒有其他不好的含義在裏面，所以也就沒有問題了。就像有的女生之間也會互稱兄弟不是嗎？

Patty: I’d like to read this book, Marcie, but I’m kind of afraid.

我其實挺願意看這書的，瑪茜，但是我有點兒害怕。

I had a grandfather who didn’t think much of reading.

我的祖父他不太重視看書這件事。

He always said if you read too many books, your head would fall off.

他總說如果你看太多書的話，你的頭就會掉下來的。

Marcie: You start the first chapter, sir, and I’ll hold on to your head.

你從第一章開始看，小子，我幫你扶住腦袋。

Kind of有點兒

口語中的表達方式，表示“有點兒，有幾分”例如Patty說的：

I’m kind of afraid.

我有點兒害怕。

需要注意的是要區別於a kind of, 當kind前面加了冠詞，如a、another、this、one等的話，則理解爲“一種、一類”，比如：

It started almost as a kind of game.

剛開始的時候幾乎就像一場遊戲。

The answer itself is a kind of pressure already.

這個答案本身就是一種壓力。

Think much of對……重視

雖然它的意思是“對……重視”“對……評價很高”，但是多用於否定句裏，來表達“對於……不重視，評價不高”。比如Patty的話

I had a grandfather who didn’t think much of reading.

我的祖父他不太重視看書這件事。

I don’t think much of him as a football player.

我並不認爲他是一個了不起的足球運動員。

Marcie: Why aren’t you reading your book, sir?

你爲什麼沒在看書，小子？

Patty: It’s too nice a day to stay inside and read, Marcie.

這麼好的天氣怎麼能待在屋裏看書，瑪茜。

Besides, I have to build this snowman.

而且，我得堆這個雪人。

If I don’t do it, no one else will, and he’ll never exist.

如果我不堆，就沒有其他人來堆了，那他就永遠不會存在。

I’m his creator. It’s my duty to give him life.

我是他的創造者。給予他生命是我的責任。

This snowman has a right to live, Marcie.

這個雪人有生存的權利，瑪茜。

Marcie: You’re weird, sir.

你真怪，小子。

too…to太……以致不能

這個短語十分重要，它強調的是too引導的前因讓to後面這件事不能成立，所以It’s too nice a day to stay inside and read，指的不是“天氣太好了適合待在室內閱讀。”而應該是“正因爲天氣太好了所以不應該待在室內閱讀”。

It’s one’s duty to do sth.做某事是某人的責任

It’s your duty to finish your homework.

完成作業是你的應該要做的。

It’s not my duty to paint this wall.

刷這面牆不是我的責任。

Patty: Marcie, what book were we supposed to read during Thanksgiving vacation?

瑪茜，我們在感恩節假期裏要讀什麼書？

Marcie: This is Christmas vacation, sir.

這是聖誕假期，小子。

Patty: Christmas vacation? How can I read something during Christmas vacation when I didn’t read what I was supposed to read during Thanksgiving vacation?

聖誕假期？我要怎麼在連應該在感恩節裏讀的書都沒有讀的聖誕假期裏讀書？

Marcie: Duck, sir. Easter is coming.

親愛的，小子。復活節都要到了。

Be supposed to應該，被期望

Vitamin C is supposed to prevent colds.

維他命C被認爲能預防感冒。

It is supposed to be good hotel.

這家旅店口碑不錯。
