John Mayer是康乃狄克州人。從小聽之聲的流行樂長大。十三歲的時候鄰居送給他一盤Stevie Ray Vaughan)的錄音帶，這是他第一次接觸藍調音樂。自此John Mayer開始學習吉他。不過兩年，他開始登臺演出，並且一鳴驚人。但是他很快就瞭解到，這不是他真正想要的。
