美國習慣用語第341期:和"end"相關的習語(2)

我們上次講了幾個由end組成的習慣用語。今天要繼續講兩個。第一個是: the short end of the stick。Stick是枝條或者棍子。從本世紀初開始美國人慣於把任何處於劣勢的稱爲the short end。這可能來自拔河比賽。嬴家手上掌握著長的一頭。就是the long end，而輸家則是短的一頭。也就是the short end。到了三十年代末這個短語後面添加了the stick，成了今天的the short end of the stick。

我們來聽個例子。這是一名記者對一個非洲國家最近發生的政變能否改變國內貧苦大衆的命運表示悲觀。

例句-1：I'm afraid the poor people will end up getting the short end of the stick again. Only a small part of the population has enjoyed everything from power to wealth.

他說：恐怕那兒的窮人還會再次吃虧。只有一小部分人才會有財有勢得到一切。

所以這兒getting the short end of the stick意思是吃虧。換句話說是得到不公平的待遇。

我們再來聽個例子，這是John在和律師商議，想控告他受僱的公司在工作上有徇私偏袒行爲。我們來聽聽他怎麼說:

例句-2：I've received the short end of the stick too many times during the last ten years. Only the inexperienced and least qualified get promoted because the boss likes pretty young women.

他說：這十年來我受到的不公平待遇太多了。只有那些既無經驗又不合格的人得到提升，原因是老闆喜歡年輕貌美的女郎。

這裏的the short end of the stick意思還是不公平的待遇。

我們要學的第二個習慣用語是: make both ends meet。Make both ends meet這個習慣用語裏的ends可能指的是帳目一端的總收入，和另一端的開支總數。這裏的meet意思是互相符合。想一想使得收入和支出互相符合。這意味著什麼呢? 讓我們通過兩個例子來體會。這兩段話說的都是妻子持家的事情。第一位婦女很成功。第二位卻相當不走運。

例句-3：It's a miracle she could make both ends meet and hold the family together all these years without her husband having a steady job. Somehow she's even managed to send four kids to college.

這位婦女在丈夫沒穩定工作的條件下簡直創造了奇蹟。她不僅做到家庭收支平衡、維持了一個完整的家，甚至還送四個孩子上了大學。

大家一定都明白了make both ends meet意思是收支平衡。

這當然是一位賢妻良母，然而這種出色的典範也不多見，例如下面要說的Smith太太就不是那麼回事兒了。Smith太太的丈夫是著名的企業家。我們來聽聽她的景況如何。

例句-4：With her extravagant tastes, Mrs. Smith couldn't make both ends meet. Finally her rich husband couldn't stand it any more and left her when she insisted on buying a ten-million dollar house.

Smith太太慣於奢侈鋪張，所以總是入不敷出。她那位有錢的丈夫實在受不了她了。最後在她堅持要買一棟價值一千萬美元的豪宅時毅然離開了她。

這裏的couldn't make both ends meet意思是收支不能平衡。換句話說就是入不敷出。
