爲了尋找王子，卡萊城堡的管家史密斯來到London，卻陰錯陽差碰到正在滿街亂跑的Garfield，並且不由分說就把Garfield當作王子捉走了。這個故事告訴我們：外面的世界是很危險的，沒事最好不要亂跑，尤其是像Garfield這樣引人注意的橙色肉球。讓我們一起來看看Garfield在卡萊城堡會有什麼樣的奇遇吧！

(1) We must protect this cat at all costs. Our fates rely on it. 我們必須不惜一切代價保護這隻貓。我們的命運就靠它了。

——在經過激烈的爭吵之後，動物們達成一致，全力保護Garfield的安全。At all costs 表示“不惜一切代價”，例如：The bridge must be repaired within three days at all costs. 要不惜一切代價在三天內把橋修好。Give one's ears也有類似的意思。此外，depend on 可以做rely on的同義替換，例如：That all depend on the specific circumstances. 那要看具體情況而定。

(2) These are your ancestors, dating back 400 years. 這些是您的祖先，可以追述到四百年前。

——Winston苦口婆心、不厭其煩地向Garfield介紹Carlyle王室，試圖把它變成王子的替代品。Date back 意爲“回溯至……”，在中學的歷史課上經常會用到這個詞，例如：This castle dates back to Roman times. 這個城堡可追溯到羅馬時代。

(3) Anything you need is only a flick of your tail away. 您只要隨便招呼一聲就能得到您要的。

——爲了留住Garfield，讓它在Carlyle城堡裏安心地冒充王子，Winston進一步向它闡述做王子的好。Flick既可作名詞也可作動詞，意思是“輕打（聲），彈開，拂去，搖動”，隨便搖搖尾巴就可以滿足自己的需要，看來Garfield要在Carlyle城堡裏享福了。詞組flick through還可以表示“輕輕翻動……”，例如：Sam flicked through a magazine while he waited. 薩姆一邊翻閱雜誌一邊等。

(4) Don't get your knickers in a twist. 別唧唧歪歪，神神叨叨地抱怨個不停。

——動物們對Garfield這個“冒牌王子”很是不滿，因爲它正在試圖把歷史悠久的城堡變成遊樂場。Winston盡力勸說大家要平靜。Knickers是一種燈籠褲或者及膝的短褲，twist則有“扭曲”的意思。關於詞組get your knickers in a twist還有如下用法：I promise I won't spend More than a hundred pounds in the sales so don't get your knickers in a twist. 我答應去逛賤賣場時花費不會超出100英鎊，因此你不必神經兮兮地嘮叨個不停。

(5) I know he's a pain in the neck, but we just got to keep him safe till Monday. 我知道它的確讓人討厭，可我們得保它安全，直到星期一。

——原來Winston也不認爲Garfield是什麼好貨，可是爲了城堡，它還是得盡力保全Garfield。A pain in the neck是美國俚語，意爲“討厭的傢伙”，got to意爲“不得不(必須) ”，例如：1. You may not like him, but you have got to admire his persistence. 你可以不喜歡他，但你不得不佩服他那種堅韌不拔的精神。2. In business, you've got to anticipate how your competitors will act. 在生意上，你必須事先估計到你的競爭對手會如何行動。3.
