Talking about enjoying the midnight moon and eating mooncakes in Mid-Autumn day(中秋賞月zhōngqiūshǎngyuè) , there is a sad love story behind the mooncakes, it's about houyi(后羿) and chang'e(嫦娥).

Who is houyi?

He is a mythological hero in Chinese literature.

Houyi was a skilled archer in 2100BC and his story happened in the ancients. There were ten suns in the sky at that time, which were actually birds – sun-birds. One day, the sun-birds decided to fly, all ten of them, across the sky. Then the earth started scorching , crops were withered and people were thirsty to die. Houyigraciously shot down nine of the ten birds and remained one, saving the earth, and was rewarded with a pill that would grant eternal life.

后羿射日hòuyìshèrì(houyi shooting the suns )

Immortality is a big step for Houyi, so he decided to hide the pill in his house and wait for awhile. One day while Houyi was out, his wife, Chang'e discovered the pill and swallowed it. She immediately became immortal and flew out the window up to the moon. Houyi caught Chang'e on her way out, and pursued her halfway to the moon, but wasn't able to make it.

嫦娥奔月(cháng'é bēnyuè)(chang'e flies to the moon)

Now once a year, on the night of the Mid-Autumn day, Houyi would looked at the fullmoon in the midnight and prepared some desserts and fruits, expressing his love to his wife,chang'e on the moon, which is why it appears so bright on that night.
