My sister and I stayed many sleepless nights at a local hospital

雙語美文:我曾是一個不友好的人

在本地一所醫院裏,我和姐姐已經通宵達旦了許多個夜晚


as our mother was in critical condition.

我們的母親身體狀況十分危急。


ICU and all that goes with it.

她已經進了重症監護室,還有隨之而來的各種檢查和醫療手段


There was a man

有一個男人


close to our age

跟我們差不多年紀


who sat alone for as many days as we had.

他坐咋牀邊的時間跟我們一樣長


The worry was on his face..

他臉上憂心忡忡


the tense conversations he had with the doctors....

還有他與醫生們之間的緊張對話


He was much more polite to us.

他對我們尤爲禮貌


I'm so ashamed to admit it..

我十分慚愧的承認


We were not very kind to him.

我們對他並不特別友好


every time he went for a bottle of water

每次他要去買瓶水喝


He offered to bring us something back..

他總會提出爲我們帶一些東西回來


We just said no..

我們只是說“不了”


Not no thank you..

不是“不用了,謝謝”


Not thanks for asking..

不是“謝謝你的好意”


Just No..

僅僅是兩個字,“不了”


Being a huge inner city hospital

作爲一個內城地區的大型醫院


they don't allow anyone in at night after 9 pm

他們到晚上9點鐘之後就不允許外人探病


unless you have an ID..

除非你有醫院的通行證


Late one Saturday night

週六夜裏,時間已經很晚了


the lobby was just a horrible place.

走廊裏亂糟糟的


We had walked out to our car

我和姐姐已經下樓準備去停車場


but had left our purses 12 floors up.

卻想起來把我們的錢包丟在12樓的病房了


The guards said NO..

門衛不讓我們進去


No ID No entry..

沒有證件,就不得入內


Before we could even get real mad

在我們真正開始發火之前


this voice came out of no where

忽然有一個聲音不知從何處傳來


and my life was forever changed.

我的生活被永遠的改變了


"Sir..“

先生,”他對守門人說到


these ladies have been sitting across from me for the last 6 days

過去整整六天,這兩位女士一直坐在我斜對面的牀邊


as their mom is in ICU..

她們的母親在重症監護室


Here is my ID..

這是我的證件


I can vouch for them

我能爲他們擔保


They going through a lot...

他們已經受了很多罪了


I'm going through a lot with my wife"..

我也爲我的妻子受了很多罪


His voice choked up as he spoke....

他一邊說,一邊聲音哽咽起來Please .拜託了


let them pass.."

請讓他們進來吧


His arms went over our shoulders as he spoke..

他說話的時候,胳膊已經放到了我們的肩膀上


His genuine warmth of kindness and compassion brought tears to our eyes..

他真誠的善意和熱情是如此溫暖,我們眼中不覺有了淚水


The guard agreed ..

守衛同意了


The man walked with us to the elevator

他有陪着我們走到電梯旁


holding our hands.

一直牽着我們的手


We found in him a complete 100% genuine person..

我們這時才發現,他是一個如此真誠的人


Over the next few days

接下來的幾天


we cried together..

我們一起哭


laughed together....

一起笑


We were all he had when his wife passed a week later.

他的妻子一週之後就去世了,我們成了唯一能安慰他的人


They hadn't lived in our state long..

他們在我們這個州居住的時間並不長


They had no family

他們無親無故


and he hadn't even met his co-workers yet

他甚至還沒有跟同事見過面


as she ended up in the hospital as soon as they arrived.

他們剛到達這裏,她就住進了醫院


Our mother came through

我們的母親熬了過去


and is fine..

現在已經大好


This sweet man’s heart was so broken.

這位好心的男人卻心痛無比


We were two of only a few people at her funeral.

We have all remained friends since that sad time.

He is our best friend.

Sadness brought us together

but our bond of friendship holds us tight.

I was as impolite as could be

and now I hate myself for it.

We're all just people.

我們都只是普通人


This man never judged us.

這個人從未對我們抱有偏見


We were just rude...

我們卻如此無禮


My only regret is

我唯一的遺憾是


I wish we'd known him soon..

我希望自己曾早一點遇到他


He is our "pal"

他是我們的“閨蜜”


We love him to death and vice versa....

我們會愛他一生一世,而他也同樣如此
