MILLIONS of gay men and women in the United States spent last week worrying over whether the country might move in the opposite direction in the matter of gay rights.

The Supreme Court of Califonia indicated last Thursday that it would uphold a controversial proposition passed last November denying homosexuals the right to marry.

Earlier, on May 15, the state Supreme Court had made a ruling that overturned a ban on same-sex marriage.

Gay couples quickly lined up to marry in California.

Homosexual rights remains a controversial topic all over the world.

Some scientists have tried to prove that homosexuality is natural, others that it’s a genetic deformity.

A few countries like Canada and the Netherlands have declared same-sex marriages legal, but some countries still see homosexual act as immoral.

Even in liberal, more tolerant societies like the US, coming out (revealing one’s homosexuality openly) means one can face a lot of pressure and challenges.

Out of interest, let’s just take a look at what the situation is like in liberal parts of Britain, and what kind of pressure gay people face in America.

Charlie Shifflett 21st century staff:GAY and lesbian Americans are living in a more tolerant time than in the past.

But the US is a big country and, in some parts of society, a homosexual can still feel like an outsider.

After all, according to a 2008 CNN poll, the majority of Americans still believe that marriage is reserved for heterosexual couples – by a margin of 55 to 44 percent.

America's tepid embrace of homosexuality stems – at least in part – from the influence of Christianity and the Bible, where "sexual immorality" is defined as lust, adultery and homosexuality, among other things.

But gays and lesbians have also met resistance from other segments of society, including the African-American community.

So, the slogan “Gay is the new black” likens the plight of homosexuals to the racism experienced by blacks in the past as well as in the present.

But this assertion is one that many African-Americans find offensive.

David Bartram21st century staff : BRIGHTON, a city by the sea about an hour’s drive from London, is sometimes described as “The Gay Capital of Europe”.

The city has a large LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) community and most people don’t bat an eyelid when they see a gay couple together.

Every year, Brighton has a “Pride Parade” – a big festival for the LGBT community that attracts over 100,000 people.

The organization that runs the parade also offers other types of support for the LGBT community, including health advice and counseling.

Their work has helped gay people find a place in society without facing prejudice.

It’s been estimated that 13 percent of the population of Brighton is part of the LGBT community.

However this can be hard to quantify.

If you drink too much, for example, and give your friend a kiss, does that make you bisexual?

Being gay is almost fully accepted in Brighton – even among sections of society that are not always known as being open to the idea.

As a result, gay people move to Brighton especially to join the crowd, reinforcing the sense of community.

That community is in fact fully integrated with the rest of society and is rarely considered any different to other people living in the city.

Brighton is not the only city in the world with a large LGBT community.

Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, and San Francisco in California are two others with similarly prominent gay communities.

Women are more likely to tolerate bad behaviour in handsome men, psychologists claim.

The first impression created by physical appearance deeply influences how women view a man's subsequent behaviour, according to the findings of a new study.

Such impressions are made in a flash - but are not always correct.

In what psychologists call the 'halo effect', people warm up to others with positive characteristics such as attractiveness - and that judgement significantly effects how they view their future behaviour.

Psychologists Jeremy Gibson and Jonathan Gore presented two pictures of men - one handsome, one ugly - to 170 different women.

They then paired each picture to one of two fictional scenarios. In one, the man asked her to borrow a pen.

In the other, he approached the woman out of the blue and asked to take her photograph.

The researcher asked the women their opinion of each man after each scenario.

After they asked to borrow a pen, the men were viewed equally by the women - their attractiveness did not affect how they were perceived.

But after they asked to take a photograph, the way the men was perceived differed wildly.

The attractive man was not deemed to have done anything wrong, while the ugly man was deemed to have crossed a line.

The story goes that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of thejourney they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face.

The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, he wrote in the sand: "Todaymy best friend slapped me in the face."

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The onewho had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him.

After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: "Today my best friend savedmy life."

The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote inthe sand and now you write on a stone. Why?"

The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us we should write it down in the sand wherewinds of forgiveness can erase it away. But when someone does something good for us, wemust engrave it in a stone where no wind can ever erase it."

LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN THE STONE.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to lovethem, but an entire life to forget them.

Send this phrase to the people you'll never forget. It's a short message to let them know thatyou'll never forget them.
