Suppose someone gave you a pen—a sealed, solid-colored pen. You couldn’t see how much inkit had. It might run dry after the first few tentative words or last just long enough to create amasterpiece (or several) that would last forever and make a difference in the scheme ofthings. You don’t know before you begin.

Under the rules of the game, you really never know. You have to take a chance! Actually, norule of the game states you must do anything. Instead of picking up and using the pen, youcould leave it on a shelf or in a drawer where it will dry up, unused. But if you do decide to useit, what would you do with it? How would you play the game?

Would you plan and plan before you ever wrote a word? Would your plans be so extensivethat you never even got to the writing?

Or would you take the pen in hand, plunge right in and just do it, struggling to keep upwith the twists and turns of the torrents of words that take you where they take you?

Would you write cautiously and carefully, as if the pen might run dry the next moment, orwould you pretend or believe (or pretend to believe) that the pen will write forever andproceed accordingly?

And of what would you write: Of love? Hate? Fun? Misery? Life? Death? Nothing?Everything?

Would you write to please just yourself? Or others? Or yourself by writing for others?

Would your strokes be tremblingly timid or brilliantly bold? Fancy with a flourish orplain?

Would you even write? Once you have the pen, no rule says you have to write. Would yousketch? Scribble? Doodle or draw?

Would you stay in or on the lines, or see no lines at all, even if they were there? Or arethey? There’s a lot to think about here, isn’t there?

Now, suppose someone gave you a life...

Not by Bread Alone

Man does not live by bread alone, but by beauty and harmony, truth and goodness, work andrecreation, affection and friendship, aspiration and worship.

Not live by bread alone, but by the splendor of the firmament at night, the glory of theheavens at dawn, the blending of colors at sunset, the loveliness of the magnolia trees, and themagnificence of the mountains.

Not live by bread alone, but by the majesty lf ocean breakers, the shimmer of the moonlight ona calm lake, the flashing silver of a mountain torrent, the exquisite patterns of snow crystals,the creations of artists.

Not by bread alone, but by the fragrance of roses, the scent of orange blossoms, the smell ofnew-mown hay, the clasp of a friend’s hand, the tenderness of a mother’s kiss.

Not by bread alone, but by the lyrics of poets, the wisdom of sages, the holiness of saints, thebiographies of great souls.

Not by bread alone, but by the lyrics of poets, the wisdom of sages, the holiness of saints, thebiographies of great souls.

Not by bread alone, but by comradeship and high adventure, seeking and finding, servingand sharing, loving and being loved.

When You Are Old 當你老了

When you are old and gray and full of sleep

And nodding by the fire,take down this book,

And slowly read,and dream of the soft look

Your eyes had once,and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,

And loved your beauty with love false or true;

But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,

And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,

Murmur,a little sadly,how love fled

And paced upon the mountains overhead,

And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

回想它們過去的濃重的陰影;
