The irreverent artwork has gone up in NowaHuta, a suburb of Krakow, Poland, as part of the city's sixthGrolsch ArtBoom Festival.

The Fountain of the Future, as it's been called by artists Bartosz Szydlowskiand Malgorzata Szydlowska, is styled after a statue of Lenin that was once afocal point of the district.

Built in the early-1950s around a massivesteelworks dedicated to Lenin, Nowa Huta was intended as an 'ideal socialisttown' that would counter-balance supposedly 'bourgeois' Krakow,reports Polskie Radio.

The whole design of the district was supposed to instill a socialist worldview,with architects perceived not as mundane municial planners but rather as'engineers of the human soul.'

But the workers proved less loyal toMarxist-Leninism than expected, and the district quickly became a centre ofopposition to the totalitarian government.

The original bronze Lenin statue was thetarget of bomb attacks in the 1970s and 1980s, but bungling dissidents onlymanaged to damage its feet.

原先的那個列寧銅像在七八十年代的時候成爲了人們襲擊的目標，但是拙劣的抗議者只摧毀了銅像的足部。

It was finally removed in 1989 after thefall of communism in Polandand the plaza were it stood was renamed 'Ronald Reagan Square'.

Mr Szydlowski was quoted by the Telegraphas saying that the statue would show people thatNowa Huta is now just a 'grey and gloomy' town and that its residents have a'sense of humour'.

The artists hope it will stimulate debateover what form a permanent installation at the same spot might take.

The town's original Lenin statue is nowkept in a Stockholmmuseum after it was bought by a Swedish millionaire in 1992.
