倫敦一貨車衝撞穆斯林中心附近行人

A man driving a white van has ploughed into pedestrians near a Muslim centre in Finsbury Park, north London, causing several casualties in what Metropolitan Police described as a “major incident”.

一名男子駕駛白色廂式貨車衝撞倫敦北部芬斯伯裏公園(Finsbury Park)附近一個穆斯林中心附近的行人，導致一人死亡，多人受傷。倫敦警方稱，這是一起“重大事件”。

Police said in a statement they were called at 00.20 on Monday June 19 to reports of a vehicle collision with pedestrians on Seven Sisters road.

“One man was pronounced dead at the scene,” the Metropolitan Police said, adding that eight people had been taken to hospital and a further two were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

A 48-year old white man has been arrested in relation to the attack, police said, adding that “he has been taken to hospital as a precaution, and will be taken into custody once discharged. He will also be subject of a mental health assessment.”

Witnesses at the scene said they had seen at least five people seriously injured with emergency services trying to resuscitate them, and video footage from a mobile phone showed a man apparently being arrested by police.

The Muslim Council of Britain said the attack took place outside Muslim Welfare House, nearby the Finsbury Park mosque but not outside the mosque itself.

One man, who declined to give his name, said he witnessed the attack. He said the van pulled into a parking space next to the community centre where people were congregating outside, before appearing to accelerate into them.

He said three men exited the van. One, who the witness believed was the driver, was grabbed and attacked by people including himself, he said. Two other men ran off. All three were white, two people said.

The van hit one person in a wheelchair who was outside the centre as well as at least another four people, according to the man who said he witnessed the attack.

Locals said on Twitter that the man was initially detained by people on the street. “I also want to confirm that innocent bystanders confronted the terrorist and held him down until police came,” tweeted a man called Didier.

Athmane Touami, who lives in the area, said he had seen at least 12 people with injuries after the van targeted people leaving a mosque on Seven Sisters Road.

“The man they arrested, he was waving at people,” Mr Touami said. “He looked happy, he looked proud of what he did.”

Muslims in the area suggested on Twitter that the attack was a racist assault aimed against Muslims.
