失聯航班機長政治立場引發政治爭鬥

The captain of the vanished Malaysia Airlines jet and his support for opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim have become the latest fodder for political rivals who are accusing each other of exploiting a national crisis.

馬來西亞航空公司(Malaysia Airlines)失聯客機的機長以及他支持反對黨領袖安瓦爾(Anwar Ibrahim)的態度成爲馬來西亞政治爭鬥的最新素材，政治對手紛紛指責對方利用全國危機爲自己謀取好處。

Capt. Zaharie Ahmad Shah, one of the pilots of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, is distantly related to Mr. Anwar's daughter-in-law, and has voiced support for the politician's People's Justice Party. Mr. Anwar said he wasn't well acquainted with the 52-year-old pilot but rejected public speculation that the flight's disappearance may be due to foul play by Capt. Zaharie.

馬航370航班的機長扎哈里(Zaharie Ahmad Shah)是安瓦爾兒媳的遠親，並曾經表示支持安瓦爾領導的人民公正黨(People’s Justice Party)。安瓦爾說，他與52歲的扎哈里不熟，但反對公衆認爲飛機失聯可能是扎哈里違規所致的猜測。

'There's not a shred of evidence to suggest any uncanny action by him or by me,' Mr. Anwar said in an interview Tuesday.

Mr. Anwar, 66 years old, is seldom far from the headlines in this predominantly Muslim nation of 28 million people. On March 7, he was convicted of breaking Malaysia's strict sodomy laws by having sex with a male aide, a charge he denies and describes as an attempt to end his political career. He served six years in prison for another sodomy conviction, which he also denies, before it was overturned in 2004. He has denied all the charges against him.

Police have ramped up their investigations into Capt. Zaharie and co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid after Malaysian officials determined that deliberate action was responsible for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappearing from civilian radar screens while en route to Beijing in the early hours of March 8. Investigators searched both men's houses over the weekend. Malaysian and foreign intelligence agencies haven't reported anything in their backgrounds that suggest links to terrorist or criminal organizations, a person familiar with the situation has said.

馬來西亞官方認定，馬航370航班在3月8日凌晨飛往北京的途中從民用雷達屏幕上消失乃是有人蓄意爲之。此後警方加強了對機長扎哈里以及副機長法裏克(Fariq Abdul Hamid)的調查。週末期間調查人員搜查了二人的住所。據一位知情人士表示，馬來西亞和外國情報機構未報告這兩人的背景中有任何地方顯示他們同恐怖分子或犯罪組織有聯繫。

In a series of media interviews, Mr. Anwar has criticized how authorities have placed Capt. Zaharie and 26-year-old Mr. Fariq at the fore of the investigation. Mr. Anwar also dismissed speculation that he or his political cause were somehow involved.

Capt. Zaharie, who is a distant uncle to the politician's daughter-in-law, is 'a party loyalist' who doesn't hold any position at the People's Justice Party--part of the three-party People's Alliance that nearly unseated Malaysia's ruling National Front coalition in elections last year.

'[Capt. Zaharie] has been very passionate about reform, about democracy and freedom in Malaysia,' Mr. Anwar said, adding that he only met the pilot briefly at political-party meetings and social gatherings.

The opposition leader, currently free on bail pending appeal on his latest conviction, also took the opportunity to chide the Malaysian government's handling of the investigation.

'The manner, management of the crisis is deemed to be incompetent,' Mr. Anwar said, referring to a series of sometimes contradictory statements from Malaysian officials on the investigation. 'They seem to be hiding something. The report is not transparent. This is causing concern. There's a major outrage among Malaysians.'

Malaysia's government responded indirectly to Mr. Anwar's remarks at a Tuesday news conference on the search for Flight 370. 'I would also like to state that the search for MH370 is bigger than politics,' Defense Minister and acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said. 'I urge all Malaysians to put our differences aside and unite during this difficult time as we focus on finding the aircraft and the 239 people on board.'

馬來西亞政府在週二召開的370航班搜救工作新聞發佈會上對安瓦爾的表態做出間接回應。國防部長兼代理交通部長希山慕丁(Hishammuddin Hussein)稱，他希望說明，MH370航班搜救工作重於政治，他敦促所有馬來西亞人擱置分歧，團結一致共度難關，專注於尋找失聯飛機和機上的239人。

Political analysts said Mr. Anwar's return to the media spotlight is likely to infuriate Malaysia's government. Malaysia already is trying to reassure China, which had more than 150 nationals were on board the missing plane, and other countries that it is doing all it can to speed up the search.

Mr. Anwar's criticisms of the government 'will be profoundly annoying,' said James Chin, a political-science professor at the Malaysia campus of Australia's Monash University. 'The government has been welcoming live coverage of the search on CNN and elsewhere, and then this happens.'

Mr. Anwar has been a pivotal figure in Malaysian politics for a generation. In the 1990s he served as deputy prime minister in the ruling coalition that has ruled Malaysia since independence from Britain in 1957. But in 1998, during a tussle for influence with then-leader Mahathir Mohamad, he was summarily fired after the first round sodomy allegations emerged. After leading a series of mass antigovernment protests, he was later arrested and convicted on charges of sodomy and corruption. The corruption conviction wasn't overturned.

After his release, Mr. Anwar helped strengthen a burgeoning opposition movement. In 2008, his opposition alliance stripped the ruling National Front government of its customary two-thirds majority in parliament.

Last year, the opposition alliance won a majority of the popular vote in national elections, but Prime Minister Najib Razak's government held on to power after winning a majority of the seats in Malaysia's parliament. The close-run result led to a brief wave of protests that pressed the government to redraw electoral boundaries, which had provided substantial representation to rural areas where support for the government remains strong.

After the March 7 guilty verdict, which came a year after Mr. Anwar was initially acquitted of the sodomy charges, Mr. Anwar said he would begin planning another campaign to bring his cause to Malaysia's people.
