Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. is weighing the possibility of increasing wages for its factory workers in China but the manufacturing giant said the potential raise isn't related to a recent spate of employee suicides.

鴻海精密工業股份有限公司(Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.)（富士康）正在考慮給中國大陸工廠工人加薪的可能，不過該製造巨頭說，可能的加薪與最近一系列員工自殺事件無關。

A Hon Hai spokesman said the wage change discussion, which predates a wave of suicides at its giant Longhau factory in Shenzhen, flowed from concerns about a tight supply of workers in the southern industrial city where Hon Hai employs more than 400,000 staffers. 'It is not related to the suicides,' he said.

Another Hon Hai worker tried to kill himself Thursday, becoming the 13th person to commit suicide or attempt to do so this year at the Longhau complex. Police said the 25-year-old man survived after cutting himself in his dormitory room at the factory, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

週四又有一名鴻海工人企圖自殺，這是今年以來龍華工廠第13個自殺或企圖自殺的員工。新華社援引警方的話報導，這名25歲的男子在工廠的宿舍中割腕，不過獲救。

The Hon Hai spokesman denied Thursday reports in two Taiwanese newspapers and at least one newspaper in China that Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou said Wednesday the company would increase its minimum wage levels by 20%.

Workers at the giant Longhua plant in Shenzhen are paid a base monthly salary of 900 yuan, or about $132, the legal minimum wage. But most work overtime, which can pay 1.5 times or more than the standard hourly rate.

The wave of suicides of Hon Hai's Lonhgau workers has brought unprecedented scrutiny on the secretive company, which operates under the trade name Foxconn and makes personal computers and other gadgets for Apple Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., Nintendo Co. and others. Many of those companies said on Wednesday they were investigating the incidents.

Thursday's attempted suicide and a suicide on Wednesday came on the heels of Hon Hai's decision to give an unusual tour of its Longhua plant to a group of journalists, and announced plans to outfit its buildings with safety nets to prevent further suicide plunges.

Critics say the spate of suicides reflects Hon Hai's poor working conditions, including compelling employees to work more than the legal number of overtime hours and creating excessive stress on workers with its military-style rigor. Hon Hai defends its treatment of workers and their working conditions, and says its compensation and overtime practices follow local labor laws and the guidelines of an industry group.

Mr. Gou on Wednesday expressed regret over the worker deaths, but defended Hon Hai's practices and its response to the suicides. 'We need time. But we have confidence and strong determination' to address the problem, he said.
