大公無私
During the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), a very noble official caled Qi HuangYang lived in the State of Jin. One day, the king summoned him to court and asked, "Now that the magistrate position of Nanyang county is vacant, who do you think is suitable for the post?"
春秋時，晉國有位品格非常高尚的大臣祁黃羊。有一次，晉王召祁黃羊入宮問他："南陽縣缺個縣令，你看，應該派誰去當比較合適呢?"
"Xie Hu is the right man for the job," Qi replied without hesitation.
祁黃羊毫不遲疑地回答說："解狐去，最合適了。
Surprised, the king asked, "Did you say Xie Hu? I thought he's your enemy. Why did you recommend him to take such an important position?"
平公驚奇的問他："你是說解狐? 他不是你的仇人嗎?你爲什麼還要推薦他擔任這麼重要的職位?"
Smiling, Qi Huangyang said, "Your Majesty didn't ask me my personal opinions o Xie Hu. You simply asked me who I thought would be competent for the position. Therefore I recommended Xie Hu.
祁黃羊笑着說： "陛下只問我什麼人能夠勝任這個職位，並沒有問我對解狐的個人看法呀!因此我推薦解狐。"
the king followed Qi's advice and made Xie Hu magistrate of Nanyang county. And sure enough, Xie Hu administered the county very well and won respect from local people and his colleagues.
於是，晉王採納了他的建議，派解狐到南陽縣去上任了。當然，解狐到任後，治理有方，他的同僚和當地百姓都尊敬他。
Some days later, the king again asked Qi Huangyang for his opinions. This time, the king was trying to find a suitable candidate for a court judge position. Qi Huangyiang recommended Qi Wu for the job. Once again, the king was surprised again by the recommendation because Qi Wu was the son of Qi Huangyang. The king asked: "Who do you recommend your son? Aren't you afraid people will gossip?"
過了一些日子，平公又向祁黃羊徵求意見。這回，晉王想找個合適的人選擔任朝廷法官。 "祁黃羊推薦了祁午。平公又奇怪起來了，因爲祁午是祁黃羊的兒子。他問道："你怎麼推薦你的兒子，不怕別人講閒話嗎?"
Qi Huangyang replied, "Your Majesty, you asked me who was the most capable person for the position of a judge, and I think Qi Wu is."
祁黃羊說："陛下只問我誰最是合適的，我認爲祁午是。"
Although the king was a bit hesitant about making Qi Wu the judge, he nevertheless gave him the position. As it turned out, Qi Wu was an upright and talented judge, who people GREatly respected.
儘管晉王還有些猶豫，他還是派了祁午去做法官。事實證明，祁午是個正直，有才能的法官，很受人們的愛戴。
Qi Huangyang's actions were praised by Confucius who said, "Qi Huangyang was right. He recommended people according to their abilities and talents, not because of personal sentiments， not because of fearing others' gossip. Therefore, people like Qi Huangyang are referred to as people "without selfish motives".
孔子聽說這兩件事，十分稱讚祁黃羊。孔子說: "祁黃羊是對的。他推薦人，完全是以才能做標準，不因爲個人偏見，便不推薦他;也不因爲怕人議論，便不推薦。像黃祁羊這樣的人，纔夠得上說"大公無私"啦!"
From Confucious' comment came the idiom "Unselfish". Anyone who handles affairs fairly and impartially can be described as "Unselfish; Perfectly impartial".
"大公無私"這個成語就是由孔子的評論而來的，用來形容那些公正無私處理事物的人。
三年級小學生英語故事：井底之蛙have you not heard of the frog that lived in a shallow well? it said to a turtle(海龜) that lived in the east sea, "i am so happy! when i go out, i jump about on the railing(欄杆，扶手) beside the mouth of the well. when i come home, i rest in the holes on the broken wall of the well. if i jump into the water, it comes up to my armpits(腋窩) and holds up my cheeks. if i walk in the mud, it covers up my feet. i look around at the wriggly(蠕動地，迴避地) worms, crabs and tadpoles(蝌蚪) , and none of them can compare with me. moreover, i am lord of this trough(水槽) of water and i stand up tall in this shallow well. my happiness is full. my dear sir, why don't you come often and look around my place?"
一口廢井裏住着一隻青蛙。有一天，青蛙在井邊碰上了一隻從海里來的大龜。 青蛙就對海龜誇口說： “你看，我住在這裏多快樂!有時高興了，就在井欄邊跳躍一陣;疲倦了，就回到井裏，睡在磚洞邊一回。或者只留出頭和嘴巴，安安靜靜地把全身泡在水裏：或者在軟綿綿的泥漿裏散一回步，也很舒適。看看那些蝦，誰也比不上我。而且，我是這個井裏的主人，在這井裏極自由自在，你爲什麼不常到井裏來遊賞呢!”
before the turtle from the east sea could get its left foot in the well, its right knee got stuck.
那海龜聽了青蛙的話，倒真想進去看看。但它的左腳還沒有整個伸進去，右腳就已經絆住了。
it hesitated(躊躇，猶豫) and retreated. the turtle told the frog about the east sea."even a distance of a thousand li cannot give you an idea of the sea's width; even a height of a thousand ren cannot give you an idea of its depth. in the time of king yu of the xia dynasty, there were floods nine years out of ten, but the waters in the sea did not increase. ln the time of king tang of the shang dynasty there were droughts(乾旱) seven years out of eight, but the waters in the sea did not decrease. the sea does not change along with the passage of time and its level does not rise or fall according to the amount of rain that falls. the greatest happiness is to live in the east sea."
它連忙後退了兩步，把大海的情形告訴青蛙說： “你看過海嗎?海的廣大，哪止千里;海的深度，哪隻千來丈。古時候，十年有九年大水，海里的水，並不漲了多少;後來，八年裏有七年大早，海里的水，也不見得淺了多少。可見大海是不受旱澇影響的。住在那樣的大海里，纔是真的快樂呢!”
after listening to these words, the frog of the shallow well was shocked into realization of his own insignificance and became very ill at ease(不安的，拘束的).
井蛙聽了海龜的一番話，吃驚地呆在那裏，再沒有話可說了。

During the Warring States Period (475-221BC), there was a man called Yue Yangzi in State Yue. One day he saw a piece of gold on the road and picked it up. He took it home and gave it to his wife. But his wife was not happy. The virtuous woman said, "I hear that a man of morality doesn't drink a thief's water and a man of probity refuses to accept alms. What do you think of the action of picking up another's lost valuable and possessing it for one's own?"
戰國時期，魏國有個叫樂羊子的人。有一天，樂羊子在路上看到一塊金子，他就撿起金子，帶回了家並把它拿給妻子看。可他妻子一點兒也不高興。這個賢惠的女人對他說："我聽人說'壯士不飲盜泉之水;廉潔的人不食嗟來之食'。把別人遺失的貴重之物撿起來據爲己有，你怎麼看待這種行爲呢?"
Yue Yangzi, feeling ashamed, sent the gold back to where he found it.
樂羊子聽了妻子的話，覺得很慚愧，就把那塊金子又扔到原來的地方。
the next year, Yue Yangzi felt that he should go out and visit scholars to enrich his knowledge. So he set off.
第二年，樂羊子離開家到了一個很遠的地方，去拜師求學。
A year later, he came back home suddenly."Why have you returned?" asked his wife in surprise, "You've only spent one year studying with scholars.""I come back because I missed you very much."
一年後，樂羊子突然回到家中，他的妻子很驚訝地問： "你怎麼回來了?你才和那些學者學了一年呀。"樂羊子說："我太想你了，所以回來看看。"
Without saying anything, his wife took a pair of scissors and went to the loom at which she had worked. Pointing at the half done brocade, she proclaimed : "This brocade is woven from the finest silk. I wove one strand after another to produce the brocade. Now if I cut it, all my previous work will be wasted. It's the same with your studies. You can acquire knowledge only through diligence. Now, you've stopped halfway. Isn't it the same as cutting the brocade on the loom?"
他的妻子聽了以後，二話不說，拿起把剪刀走到她的織布機前。她指着那塊已經完成了一半的錦緞說： "這塊錦緞用的是最好的絲。我一絲絲的累積來織成這錦緞。如果我現在把它剪斷，就等於前功盡棄。你求學也是這樣。如果現在停止，和剪斷織布機上的錦緞有什麼區別?"
Yue Yangzi was moved by what she said. He again left home to visit scholars.
樂羊子被妻子的話所感動，於是立刻離開家，繼續拜師求學。
Several years later he became a learned man.
幾年後，樂羊子終於完成學業，成爲一個博學的人。
