出租車的由來：1907年初春的一個夜晚，富家子弟亞倫同他的女友去紐約百老匯看歌劇。散場時，他去叫馬車，問車伕要多少錢?雖然離劇場只有半里路遠，車伕竟然漫天要價，多出平時10倍的車錢。亞倫感到太離譜,就與車伕爭執起來，結果被車伕打倒在地。亞倫傷好後，爲報復馬車伕，就設想利用汽車來擠跨馬車。後來他請了一個修理鐘錶的朋友設計了一個計程儀表，並且給出租車起名“Taxi-car”,這就是現在全世界通用的“Taxi”(的士)的來歷。1907年10月1日，“的士”首次出現在紐約的街頭。
