它來源於十八世紀美國的西部，那時候的人們經常騎馬代步，他們發現馬不僅不容易迷路，而且還會趨吉避凶，於是人們就覺得馬的記憶力還有感知能力超強，馬兒很聰明，能識別出各種環境做出判斷，所以人們就用horse sense來指代“常識”。

Top dog

英語中以dog代人的表達非常多，例如lucky dog(幸運兒)；sea dog(老練水手)；top dog(大佬，很厲害的人物)；big dog(保鏢)等等

這些表達中dog已轉化成“傢伙fellow”的意思，具體意義如何看前面的修飾語。

Pig out  狼吞虎嚥，大吃特吃

你知道pig out 是什麼意思嗎？有的同學會這樣翻譯“豬，出來吧”，或者是“豬出欄了”。這樣理解當然是錯了。我們都知道，豬是貪婪的動物，貪吃好睡。英語裏面關於pig的象徵意義，其實也和我們漢語一樣，都有吃貨的意思。詞組pig out 就是“狼吞虎嚥地大吃；大吃特吃”。

Even though I'm on a diet, I still like to pig out with my friends sometimes.

儘管我在節食，我還是很喜歡偶爾跟朋友出去大吃特吃。

Love rat  愛情騙子，指那些經常在戀人背後出軌的人

“愛情老鼠”這個表達，也經常出現在通俗小報上:

He's had affairs with three different women - he's a complete love-rat.

他至少已經和三個女人曖昧不清了，是個徹頭徹尾的愛情騙子。
