地道美語練習第1期:別那麼悲觀

J:材料雖然簡單,但是大家可以跟讀錄音進行操練,提高發音.就算是很熟悉的表達也要反覆誦讀,達到運用自如的地步.

1 Don't be that negative

A:I always think everybody looks down on me.
我總覺得別人看不起我.

B:Don't be that negative.
別那麼悲觀.

A:How can you be optimistic? You can see it in their eyes.
你怎麼能那麼樂觀?從他們的眼裏我就能看出來.

B:I find it there is no meaning in living in this world.
我覺得活在這個世界上真沒意思.

A:Don't be that negative.
別那麼悲觀.

B:Really, life is so boring.
真的,生活真無聊.

look down on somebody/something: to think that you are better than somebody/something 蔑視;輕視;瞧不起
She looks down on people who haven't been to college. 她瞧不起沒上過大學的人.

類似表達:
Despise: to dislike and have no respect for somebody/something 鄙視;蔑視;看不起
She despised gossip in any form. 她對任何形式的流言蜚語都嗤之以鼻.
He despised himself for being so cowardly. 他爲自己如此怯懦而自慚形穢.

There's no meaning in doing sth:做某事沒意義
類似:there's no point in doing sth.

A: Why are you in such a hurry?
你那麼急幹什麼?

B: I should finish it as soon as possible.
我要儘快完成.

A: Don't worry, do it step by step.
別急,一步一步來.

B: Why can't I learn it?
我怎麼就學不會?

A: Don't worry, do it step by step.
別急,一步一步來.

B: I feel I'm really stupid.
我覺得自己真的很愚蠢.

Step by step: gradually; in a gradual manner
類似表達: one thing at a time
I'll explain it to you step by step. 我來一步一步地給你解釋.

Step在這裏是"步,階段"的意思.
I'd like to take this idea a step further. 我想把這一思想深化一步.
This was a big step up(= to a better position)in his career. 這是他在事業上向前邁出的一大步.
