【18】口語詞組 keep up
這是一個很常用的詞組，表示跟上信息更新的速度。這裏愛德華對貝拉說keep up的意思是說就算你來這兒的原因很複雜，我也有興趣洗耳恭聽。
其它意思：不間斷地做某事；保持聯絡

【19】背景知識：metaphase
metaphase是生物學的專有名詞，是指細胞分裂的中期。這個段落裏貝拉和愛德華的生物課上在做觀察細胞分裂階段的實驗，出現了一組關於細胞分裂的專有名詞，包括：
Mitosis細胞分裂；Preprophase早前期；Prophase前期；Prometaphase前中期；Metaphase中期；Anaphase中後期；Telophase後期。


【20】背景知識：minor league baseball
在美國，棒球是一項十分受歡迎的運動，專業的聯盟比賽叫做大聯盟，也就是Major League Baseball；相對級別低一些的就是Minor league baseball了。


【21】俚語解釋：figure you out
figure out有發現、決定的意思，也可以表示解決了問題，但顯然在這邊不是這麼解釋。figure sb. out在口語裏面很常見，表示瞭解某人、理解某人，或者揣測某人的心理。
