《摩登家庭》S2E23：我們都在努力證明自己

Alex今天要作爲畢業生代表在初中畢業典禮上講話，一大家子人經歷了驚心動魄的一天。

1. knock/throw sb for a loop

knock/throw sb for a loop這裏的意思是使人心煩，也有“使大爲驚訝”的意思。

He knocked me for a loop when he said he was quitting his job.

他說他要辭職的時候嚇了我一跳。

pick up the pieces的意思是“重整旗鼓；力求恢復正常”，這裏的收拾爛攤子倒是很對應pieces，有種很混亂的感覺。

The fire was a blow, but we were determined to pick up the pieces and get the business back on itsfeet.

火災是個打擊，但我們決心重整旗鼓，恢復經營。

pick up也有接、取的意思，比如順帶去某物就可以用pick up：

When you're in town could you pick up the books I ordered?

你進城時能幫我取一下我訂購的書嗎？

2. bounce off 

bounce的動詞本意是彈起；（使）跳躍，也有徵求別人的看法的意思。

bounce sth off sb的完整意思就是“試探…對…的看法”。

Can I bounce a couple of ideas off you?

我可以跟你交流幾個想法嗎？

補充bounce的兩個實用表達：

bounce back 恢復；恢復元氣；重振旗鼓

bounce sb into sth （通常指在政治上）迫使…做（不願做的事）

3. rule out

rule out表示“ 不考慮；排除”，更書面一點的意思就是“使…不可能發生；防止”。

A serious car accident in 1986 ruled out a permanent future for him in farming.

1986年的一起嚴重車禍使他永遠無法務農了。

4. figure out

這裏的insecurity形容的是一種不安全感，是一種不安的狀態。

演講中Alex想表達的意思是是，我們都有着自己的難言之隱，而我們也在努力地改變自己，去證明自己。

figure out主要有這兩個意思：

①計算出

We need to work out the total cost of the project.

我們需要算出這項工程的總造價。

②理解；想出

There will be a full investigation to work out what caused the accident.

將進行全面的調查以找出事故發生的原因。
