Being Surprised

Glyn: Morning. Ellie.
Ellie: Hi. Glyn Do you know who's just got married? Old MacDonald.
Glyn: You're joking. I can hardly believe my ears. He's over eighty! Who's the lovely bride?
Ellie: He's nearly ninety. He met a woman at a church dance and I guess it was love at first sight for both of them. I guess
they are both quite active at their church, so it was easy to meet and spend time together.
Glyn: Wow! Close to ninety? Are you sure? What about her?
Ellie: I'm positive. I just saw them and asked how they were doing. She is eighty-four and on her sixth marriage.
Glyn: Is she really?
Ellie: Yes, she is. And guess what? She has 34 grandchildren and almost 50 great-grandchildren.
Glyn: Really? Quite a woman, isn't she?

1.“get married”這個詞組的意思是“結婚”,強調動作,而“be married”強調已婚狀態,例如:Are you married?(你結婚了嗎?)
2.“love at first sight”是指“一見鍾情”,關於“love”的短語還有“fall in love with sb.”,表示“愛上某人”;“Platonic love
We live close to the park.(我們住得離公園很近)。
Our maths teacher is quite a

Professor Green certainly threw us a curve today. Half the questions were from parts of the book he told us to read but he
never covered them in class. Of course. most of us didn't bother to read the stuff, so we really got caught.
與“throw sb.a curve”意思相似的短語是“throw sb. for a loop”意爲“使某人吃驚且煩惱”。
Bill told me he couldn't take me out last night because he had to study for a big exam. So it threw me for a loop when I saw
him walking into the movie theater with that stupid girl who sits next to him in biology class.
