Michael和李華今天坐地鐵去書店買書。現謁?欽?詰靨?稀?ichael今天會教李華兩個常用語：jerk和street smart。

L: Michael, 我們是這一站下車嗎？

M: Yeah.

L: 喲，這人怎麼回事呀，直往人羣裏擠。在紐約，一般人都會站在 一邊好讓別人下車。

M: People are usually a lot more courteous. That one guy was a real jerk.

L: 對，人們一般都很有禮貌的。那個人真是討厭。你剛纔說他是什 麼來着？

M: Jerk. Jerk is someone who is mean and inconsiderate.

L: 原來Jerk就是很粗魯，不顧別人的人。那依我看哪，好多人都是 jerk。有的人開車，在靠近別人車子很近的地方硬要擠到別人前面 去。這些人也可以說是jerks，對嗎？

M: They certainly are. But be careful, this word is very mean.

L: 噢，叫人jerk是很不禮貌的，那用這個詞的時候可真是要小心。 Michael，謝謝你告訴我，否則我要是隨便叫人jerk，那就會出問題 了。

M: See that man across the street? The one who's shouting and yelling at the little girl? He must be a real jerk.

L: 看見了。一個大人對着那麼小的女孩大叫大嚷，絕對是個討厭的 人。Michael，雖然你有時候也很討厭，不過我想你還沒到那個程度。

M: Well, thanks, I guess.

L: Michael，我從來沒有在這個站下過車。我們該往哪兒走呀？

M: To the right, this way.

L: 往右拐？ 你知道書店在哪裏嗎？ 好吧，那我就跟着你走。

嗨，Michael，你以前沒去那個書店買過書，你怎麼知道它在哪兒 呢？你好象什麼地方都認識，總是知道要往那裏走。

M: Well, I grew up in the city. I guess you could say I'm street smart.

L: 我知道你是在紐約長大的。你說你是street smart？Street是街道， smart是聰明，這兩個詞放在一起是什麼意思呀？

M: It means I know how city life operates, I know how to deal with different situations.

L: Street smart就是知道在大城市生活該怎麼處置一些事情，應該如何 應付各種不同的情況。那麼，street smart是不是和保護自己，不要被 壞人襲擊也有關係哪？

M: Yes, being street smart also means you know how to be careful, for example, at night time.

L: 噢，street smart也是指一個人知道應該怎樣小心，例如夜晚在外 面活動的時候。要是你在紐約，或在北京都知道在地鐵上如何防 止小偷，那也能稱爲street smart，是不是？

M: Yes, that would be street smart. For instance, if you walk at night, you've got to be alert if anyone is behind you.

L: 對，晚上在外面走路是要注意後面有沒有人，有的話，要觀察這 個人是不是另有企圖。Michael，你去中國好幾次了，你在中國是 不是也很street smart？ 比如說，在中國買東西的時候往往可以討 價還價。你是一個外國人，他們大概會對你提高價格吧？

M: No way, I had heard about that before I went to China. So I was pretty street smart and knew how to bargin.

L: 原來你去中國前已經聽說了，所以你知道怎麼樣和別人討價還價。 Michael，我發現你非常street smart，也不是一個jerk。
