美國人在日常生活中經常用 hot 這個字，例如 hot potato， hot dog， hot number， hot rod 等等。它們有的時候代表好的、正面的意思，但有一些則具有反面的意思。今天我們要介紹兩個和 hot 這個字有關的習慣用語。第一個是：hot seat。

大家都已經知道 hot 這個字是熱的意思，seat 就是座位。 Hot seat 這個俗語從字面上來解釋就是那個座位很熱，或很燙。但是，它的真正意思卻並非如此。大家都知道，有些國家在處決那些被判死刑的犯人時不是用槍決的方式，而是讓犯人坐在一張可以通電的椅子上，把他電死的。以前，人們就是把犯人坐的那張椅子叫做 hot seat。可是，美國好些州現在都已經廢除了死刑。Hot seat 這個俗語的意思也有所改變。現在，hot seat 這個俗語指的是那種可能會產生麻煩，或讓人感到難堪的局面。請聽下面這個例子：

例句-1: "I thought it would be fun to judge the high school beauty contest. Instead I ended up on the hot seat. When we picked the winner, I made one girl happy and nineteen others mad at me."
