Located in the checkroom in Union Station,I can see everybody that comes up the stairs. I remem¬ber seeing Harry that first evening. He wasn' t much more than a thin, anxious kid then. He was all

dressed up and waited at the head of the stairs for the passengers from the 9:05 train. I knew he was meeting his girl. However, she still didn’t come when the passengers from the 10:02 had all airived and left,Harry was looking pretty desperate. When he came close to my window,I called out and asked him what she looked like.

“She's small and dark," he said,“and nineteen years old and very neat in the way she walks. ” he said, thinking a minute,“ Her eyebrows come to a little point in the middle. ” Then he showed me the telegram he’d received: ARRIVE THURSDAY. MEET ME STATION. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. day, after about two weeks,Harry and I were talking and I told him about my theory. “If you’ll just wait long enough,” I said, “you'll see her coming up those stairs some day. ” He turned andooked at the stairs as though he had never seen them before

The next day when I came to work, Harry was behind the counter of Tony' s magazine stand. He looked at me rather sheepishly(羞怯地)and said,“Well, I had to get a job somewhere, didn’t I?” I noticed that Harry always saw every person who came up the stairs.

Then came yesterday. I heard a cry and a lot of things falling while Harry was Jumping over the counter. He ran across and grabbed a girl. She was small and dark and her eyebrows came to a little point in the middle.

What apparently had happened three years before was that May had come by bus,not by train, and in her telegram she meant “ bus station ”,not “ railroad station ”. She had waited at the bus station for days and had spent all her money trying to find Harry. Finally she got a job typing.

“What?” said Harry,“Have you been working in town? All the time? Well,Heavens. ” He pointed across to the magazine stand. “I’ve been working there all the time and watched everybody that came up the stairs. ”

After a minute she backed away and pointed very stiffly toward the north end of the station. “I never came up the stairs before. You see, I went out of town yesterday on a short business trip. Harry, for three years, for three solid years, I' ve been right over there working right in this very station, typing,in the office of the stationmaster. ”

LH,a student from a medical college,writes :

I' ve been annoyed for years by my poor memory. It blocks me from improving my English language skills. How to get rid of this problem? I’ ve been searching for ways to get any effect. . . but I can’t see any of them works. I want to broaden my vocabulary eagerly!

Can you help me,please?

My comments :

I don' t know if you have a poor memory. I do know you have a poor excuse.

When we do something well, people often owe our success to talent. That’s their excuse. Talent is overblown. Our success is down to effor. That means honest hard work, putting in the hours while others are playing (or praising us for having talents they themselves don’t possess).

Conversely, when we don' t do something well,we often attribute (歸咎)our failure to something we seemingly don' t have control over — we didn' t go to the best school, the weather is hot down south or whatever. This is our excuse. It makes our failures easier to take. But deep down,we know our lack of success is down to effort and interest.

Let' s face it,LH,no one has that much better a memory than another. One man may be able to count pi to 17 places (3. 1415926575897932) . But that same man may fail to recall the name of the cur¬rent Prime Minister.

You have a problem remembering English vocabularies. That' s nothing unusual. There are many diagnoses to give, but if you pardon my bluntness (率直),I'll point to two things — either you' re not giv¬ing the effort or you' re not interested in remembering the stupid words in the first place. Either case, you'll find it hard to see results.

Ask yourself these questions. Does English really interest you? Is remembering words and improving your English language skills really important to you? If so, give the effort ——you’ d be happy to. If not, do something else and be at peace with the fact that memory doesn' t always serve when it comes to some English words. Either way, don' t allow poor memory to be an excuse. It' s not what' s holding you back.

I can help you,but please,I can' t help you as much as you can help yourself.

25. Where can we probably read this passage?

A. From a science magazine. B. From someone' s blog.

C. From a medical textbook. D. From someone’ s diary.

26. What does the writer think of LH' s problem?

A. LH doesn' t have a gift for learning English.

B. LH doesn' t make an effort or lacks interest.

C. LH’ s failure is due to a poor memory.

D. LH doesn' t study in the best school.

27. The underlined word “Conversely” in the passage means .

A. At the same time B. In addition C. On the contrary D. In a word

28. The writer suggests that .

A. LH should find another excuse for his failure

B. LH should turn to somebody else for help

Imagine walking into a room of strangers knowing your clothes could keep you calm,or wearing a jacket that could cheer you up after a breakup. That’s the dream of Microsoft, which has described such a piece of futuristic clothing in a patent.

It shows a ‘mood shirt’ that reads a wearer’ s emotions and then stimulates(刺激)their nervous system in a way that can either cheer them up or calm them down. It is designed to provide a user with a cost effective, reliable and easy to use way to enhance their physical health and mental well-being as well as their success in communicating or negotiating with other people. It is also suggested that it could be es¬pecially useful for elderly people and those with disabilities and autism(孤獨症).

In general,a system of sensors inside the clothes read the wearer' s hear rate, skin temperature and measure the movements they make.

In the patent, published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office,it says these sensors are connected to a system of actuators (制動器)sitting close to the skin so they are able to create a feeling of pressure or produce music.

For example, the item of clothing could switch on cooling actuators if it thought a wearer was getting hot and nervous on a date,or play a happy song from a minute speaker,if it sensed they were sad.

It goes on to say the system could be used to convey the state of people nearby — but it doesn' t ex¬plain how a piece of clothing could obtain data about a stranger. It allows the user to reflect on and react to the current affective state of these other people, and informs the user when and how the affective state of these other people changes.

Like every patent, there is no guarantee the technology described will ever become a reality.

29. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “enhance“ in Para. 2?

A. improve B. change

C. protect D. remove

30. Why can the clothes sense a user’s mood?

A. Because the clothes are designed by Microsoft.

B. Because the user can communicate with the clothes.

C. Because the sensors inside the clothes can get the data of the user.

D. Because the actuators can make a feeling of pressure on the user.

31. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. The design is especially useful for those with some mental problems.

B. The clothes can play a happy song when the user feels down.

C. The “mood shir” may make you sense the state of the people around you.

D. There is no doubt that the design will come into a reality some day.

32. What’s the main purpose of the passage?

A. To promote a new product. B. To introduce a new patent.

C. To give advice on people' s health. D. To tell us a story of the “mood shirt”.

D

Marvel’s Captain America : Civil War is an absolutely amazing film. There' s no denying it; we’ ve seen it, and we love it. Not only has it gone on to become one of the best rated Marvel movies of all time, it' s already widely considered one of the greatest superhero movies ever created.

However, the fact that Civil War is a great and successful movie doesn’t mean that it’s without its fair share of problems. Nothing is perfect, and we cannot in good conscience claim that Civil War has es¬caped every problem that has ever bothered a Marvel film. With that in mind,we have made a list of the four common issues with Marvel' s films that once again raised their ugly heads in Civil War. Now let' s get the ball rolling with No. 1 …

The Poor Musical Score

It is honestly amazing that after so many films, the Marvel Cinematic Universe still has yet to really land on any strong musical themes for any of its characters. Captairn America : Civil War continues the longstanding tradition of weak soundtracks among Marvel movie but still forgettable musical score.

Marvel' s Unwillingness to Kill Main Characters

I understand that killing characters is a difficult decision to make, but at this point,Marvel needs to grow a pair and genuinely kill an Avenger. Superheroes don' t need to die in every Marvel movie, but someone has to go down soon before we start losing interest in the safety of these characters.

An Ordinary Villain(反派)

This isn' t necessarily actor Daniel Brlihl' s fault ; the film simply has a hard time giving him enough room to shine and develop properly. At many points in the film,it often feels like he was just served as a chessman for starting a conflict between Captain America and Iron Man.

Obvious Set-up for Future Films

Although it' s not quite as heavy handed as Batman sending Wonder Woman an email laying out the details of the future DC films,Captain America : Civil War still often feels like a trailer (預告片)for next MCU movie more than a self-contained film.

33. The passage is mainly talking about .

A. the prizes won by Captain America: Civil War

B. the shorcomings of Captam America : Civil War

C. the performance of the main characters in the film

D. the story of Marvel' s Captain America : Civil War

34. What can we learn from the passage?

A. The musical themes in the film is impressive.

B. Nobody will ever die in a Marvel’s film.

C. The villain in Civil War doesn’ t stand out much.

D. The film is actually a trailer for next one.

35. What’s the style of the passage?

A. An adverisement for a film. B. A poster of a film.

C. An introduction of a film. D. A review of a film.

第二節(共5小題;每小題2分,滿分10分)

根據短文內容,從短文後的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項爲多餘選項。

A critic is a judge. A judge must study and think about the material presented to him, accept it, correct it or reject it after thinking over what he has read, watched or heard。

36 because I am thinking along with the writer, asking him questions, seeing whether he

answers the questions and how well he answers them. I mark the good passages to store them in my mem-ory and ask myself about every other part and about the complete piece of writing where,

how and why could or should I improve upon it?

37 . How do they know what will hut others? Wouldn’ t you rather believe the experience of the ages that says,‘‘ A man is what he has read,’ and ‘‘ Our reading and studies carry over into our lives” ?

Let' s get back to the beneficial effects of thinking while reading. 38 . We understand more about the universe, its people and many of its wonders. We leam to think and observe in new ways. We certainly do get a feeling for the language we are reading. All good writers in any language have been readers who read critically and creatively and continuously.

Reading critically also helps me to develop and refine my emotions to the point where I can tell whether a report,a story or a poem is genuinely humane(高尚的)or not. 39 .

40 . How can a person who has a bit of kindness in his heart read about all the miseries and tragedies that people have and not want to do and actually do what he can to relieve those people in every way he can and as much as he can?

A. It helps us to enlarge our minds

B. Finally, reading will and must broaden my love for others

C. That sort of critical reading might well be called creative reading

D. Don’t believe those who say that bad reading cannot hurt a person

E. It' s not how much you read but what you read that counts

F. Every man is his own best critic

G. That’s to say it helps me tell whether the writer is an honest writer

第二節(共10小題;每小題1.5分,滿分15分)

閱讀下面的材料,在空白處填入適當的內容(1個單詞)或括號內單詞的正確形式。

When a man is crazy about something,it means he is interested in it and wishes to know something about it. There is nothing wrong with curiosity in 61 (it) . Whether it is good or bad depends on what people are curious about.

Sometimes curiosity may be foolish 62 wrong. Some people with nothing to do are full of curiosity about what their neighbors are doing. They have a strong wish 63 (know) what they are bringing home or taking outside,or 64 they have come home so early or late. Such curiosity is not only foolish but also harmful. Most 65 (probable),it may lead to a small talk which often brings harm or disrespect to others, thus 66 ( hurt) others' feelings.

However, there is 67 clever curiosity — the curiosity of wise men,who wonder at all the great things and try to find out all they can learn about them. Columbus could never have found America if he had not been curious. Watt would never have made the steam engine 68 his curiosity about the rising of the kettle lid. All the discoveries in human history 69 (make) as a result of curiosity, so the clev¬er curiosity is never about 70 (important) things which have little or nothing to do with the happiness of the public.

Thankfully, all these experiences help to shape my characters to be out-going, ready to help and easy to get along with. As a Jing Zhou local, I will spare no effort to be a good host and make it my responsibility to introduce my hometown to the visitors.

I think I am well fit for serving the Games. If I am allowed to be a volunteer, I promise to fulfill my duty and do my part. Wish a success of the Games!
