英語中情態動詞may, might的用法

情態動詞(Modal verbs)本身有一定的詞義，表示語氣的單詞。但不能獨立作謂語，只能和動詞原形一起構成謂語。情態動詞用在行爲動詞前，表示說話人對這一動作或狀態的看法或主觀設想。情態動詞雖然數量不多，但用途廣泛，主要有下列： can (could), may (might), must, need,ought to, dare (dared), shall (should), will (would) must not。

1.may, might的用法

may, might都表示“可以”，不過might更客氣委婉一些：

May I join you?

我可以加入你們嗎?

They may use ours.

他們可以用我們的。

You might as well tell the truth.

你不妨講真話。

may和might都表示“可能”、“或許”：

He may have known it already.

他可能已知道了。

That may happen sometimes, you know.

你知道，那種事有時可能發生。

You might have caught a cold.

你也許感冒了。

Anybody might make mistakes.

任何人都可能犯錯誤。

may, might用在表示目的等一些狀語從句中：

Tell her your phone number so that she maycontact you in future.

把你的電話號碼給她，以便她今後與你聯繫。

She studies very hard so that she might apply to a better college.

她學習很用功，以便能報考一所較好的大學。
