It's the bedtime ritual every parent dreads - being asked to read the same book for theumpteenth time.

But while the constant repetition might be mind-numbing for mum or dad, it is the best wayfor toddlers to learn new words, according to research.

The findings suggest parents are wasting money by spending a fortune on huge bookcollections in the hope they will inspire their little ones.

Instead, a small selection of favourites such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar or The Gruffalo willachieve far more.

Dr Jessica Horst, of the University of Sussex’s WORD Lab devised an experiment to check howquickly three-year-olds could recognise and recall six new words.

The children were visited three times in a week at their homes.

One group heard the same story three times back-to-back each time and another was readthree different stories. All had the same amount of new words which appeared the samenumber of times.

When researchers returned a week later, they found the children who heard the same storyover and over had typically learned 3.6 of the new words.

Those that were exposed to a variety of stories remembered only 2.6.

The also noted the ‘repetition’ group learned at a faster rate than those in the ‘variety’ group.

Dr Horst said: ‘We are showing that less is more, to a point. Obviously, the more times youread to a child and the more books you have will help them. But you don’t need to go crazy andbuy every single Thomas the Tank Engine book. Reading the same books over and over againhelps.’

Previous studies have found parents spend just 49 minutes doing things with their childreneach day. One in three don’t read to their children before putting them to bed at night. Yet 30minutes of one-on-one literacy sessions can improve reading age by nearly two years in lessthan five months.

It doesn't matter if books are delivered in print or by smartphone, the main thing is to get lostin reading them. Reading books is vital for human development.

Why should we bother reading a book? All children say this occasionally. Many of the 12million adults in Britain with reading difficulties repeat it to themselves daily. But for the firsttime in the 500 years since Johannes Gutenberg democratised reading, in a world ofaccelerating technology, increasing time poverty and diminishing attention spans, shouldthey invest precious time sinking into a good book?

The discovery that our brains are physically changed by the experience of reading is somethingmany of us will understand instinctively, as we think back to the way an extraordinary bookhad a transformative effect on the way we viewed the world. This transformation only takesplace when we lose ourselves in a book, abandoning the emotional and mental chatter of thereal world. That's why studies have found this kind of deep reading makes us moreempathetic, or as Nicholas Carr puts it in his essay, The Dreams of Readers, "more alert tothe inner lives of others".

Rationally, we know that reading is the foundation stone of all education, and therefore anessential underpinning of the knowledge economy. So reading is – or should be – an aspect ofpublic policy. But perhaps even more significant is its emotional role as the starting point forindividual voyages of personal development and pleasure. Books can open up emotional,imaginative and historical landscapes that equal and extend the corridors of the web. Theycan help create and reinforce our sense of self.

If reading were to decline significantly, it would change the very nature of our species. If we, inthe future, are no longer wired for solitary reflection and creative thought, we will bediminished. However, technology throws up as many solutions as it does challenges: for everydoor it closes, another opens. So the ability, offered by devices like e-readers, smartphonesand tablets, to carry an entire library in your hand is an amazing opportunity. Publishers needto use every new piece of technology to embed long-form reading within our culture. Weshould concentrate on the message, not agonise over the medium. We should be agnosticon the platform, but evangelical about the content.

We must also get better at harnessing the ability of the internet to inform readers, andpotential readers, about all the extraordinary new books that are published every year, andto renew their acquaintance with the best of rich literary tradition. The research shows thatif we stop reading, we will be different people: less intricate, less empathetic, less e can hardly be a better reason for fighting to protect the future of the book.

Of Studies

Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability.

Their chief use for delight, is in privateness and retiring;

其怡情也,最見於獨處幽居之時;

for ornament, is in discourse;

其傅彩也,最見於高談闊論之中;

and for ability, is in the judgment and disposition of business.

Read not to contradict and confute;

nor to believe and take for granted;

nor to find talk and discourse;

亦不可職位尋章摘句;

but to weigh and consider.

Some books are to be tasted,

others to be swallowed,

and some few to be chewed and digested;

that is, some books are to be read only in parts;

others to be read, but not curiously;

and some few to be read wholly,

and with diligence and attention.

Some books also may be read by deputy,

and extracts made of them by others;

but that would be only in the less important arguments,

and the meaner sort of books; else distilled books are, like common distilled waters, flashy things.

Reading maketh a full man;

conference a ready man;

and writing an exact man.

And therefore, if a man write little,he had need have a great memory;

if he confer little, he had need have a present wit;

and if he read little, he had need have much cunning,

to seem to know that he doth not.

Histories make men wise;

poets witty;

the mathematics subtile;

natural philosophy deep; moral grave;

logic and rhetoric able to contend.

邏輯修辭之學使人善辯;

Abeunt studia in mores.

Nay there is no stand or impediment in the wit,but may be wrought out by fit studies:

like as diseases of the body may have appropriate exercises.

Bowling is good for the stone and reins;

shooting for the lungs and breast;

gentle walking for the stomach;

riding for the head; and the like.

So if a man's wit be wandering,

let him study the mathematics;

for in demonstrations, if his wit be called away never so little,he must begin again.

蓋演題需全神貫注,稍有分散即須重演;

If his wit be not apt to distinguish or find differences,let him study the schoolmen;

for they are cymini sectores.

蓋是輩皆吹毛求疵之人;

If he be not apt to beat over matters,and to call up one thing to prove and illustrate another,let him study the lawyers' cases.

So every defect of the mind may have a special receipt.
