　　經典寓言故事：金錢包

A beggar found a leather purse that someone had dropped in the marketplace. Opening it, he discovered that it contained 100 pieces of gold. Then he heard a merchant shout,“A reward! A reward to the one who finds my leather purse!”

一個乞丐在集市撿到了一個別人遺失的皮錢包。他打開錢包一看，發現裏面有100枚金幣。這時，他聽到一個商人大聲叫喊：“有重謝啊!誰發現我的皮錢包有重謝啊!”

Being an honest man, the beggar came forward and handed the purse to the merchant saying,“Here is your purse. May I have the reward now?”

乞丐很誠實，走過去把錢包遞給商人說：“這是你的錢包吧，我現在可以得到重謝了嗎?”

“Reward?”scoffed the merchant, greedily counting his gold.“Why, the purse I dropped had 200 pieces of gold in it. You've already stolen more than the reward! Go away or I'll tell the police.”

“重謝?”商人一邊貪婪地數着金幣，一邊嘲諷地說，“啊，我丟失的錢包裏有200枚金幣，你偷走的金幣比我要給你重謝的還要多。走開，不然我要叫警察了!”

“I'm an honest man,”said the beggar defiantly,“Let us take this matter to the court.”

“我是個誠實的人!”乞丐反駁道，“我們到法庭評理去!”

In court the judge patiently listened to both sides of the story and said,“I believe you both. Justice is possible! Merchant, you stated that the purse you lost contained 200 pieces of gold. Well, that's a considerable cost. But, the purse this beggar found had only 100 pieces of gold. Therefore, it couldn't be the one you lost.”

法庭上，法官耐心地聽完雙方的陳述，然後說：“我相信你們兩個人，法律是公正的!商人，你說你丟失的錢包裏有200枚金幣，這可是相當大的一筆錢。但是這個乞丐發現的錢包裏只有100枚金幣，因此，這個錢包不是你丟的那個。”

And, with that, the judge gave the purse and all the gold to the beggar.

　經典寓言故事：貓頭鷹和驢

A blind ass, which had undertaken a long journey, wandered from the road into a forest.

一頭瞎眼的驢子在長途跋涉時迷了路，走進了森林。

As the night came on, our foolish fellow went so far into the thicket that it couldn't move either backward or forward; and even one who had eyes would have been unable to get out of that difficulty. But an owl, by good luck, happened to be in the neighbourhood, and offered to act as a guide to the ass.

夜幕降臨時，這頭蠢驢鑽進了灌木叢，進退不得。就是視力好的動物也沒有辦法擺脫這個困境。幸運的是，一隻貓頭鷹恰好在附近，它樂意爲驢子當嚮導。

We all know how well owls see at night. Hills, hillocks, precipices—all these our owl distinguished as if it had been daybreak, it had made its way with the ass to the level road.

衆所周知，貓頭鷹在夜間視力很好，斜坡啦、山丘啦、懸崖啦——它都能辨認出來，就像在白天一樣。黎明時分，它已領着驢子來到了平地上。

Now, how could any one part with such a guide? So the ass entreated the owl not to desert it, and determined to visit the whole world in the owl's company.

Our owl seated itself like a lord on the back of the ass, and the two friends began to continue their journey.

But did it prosper? No. The sun had scarcely begun to glow in the morning sky, when a greater than nocturnal darkness hid everything from the owl's eyes. But our owl is obstinate; it directs the ass at random.

“Take care!”it cries,“We shall tumble into a pool, if we go to the right.”

There was really no pool on the right; but on the left there was even worse.

實際上，右邊根本沒有什麼池塘，左邊的情況反而更糟。

“Keep more to the left—another pace to the left!”

And, the owl and the ass fell into the ravine together.

結果，貓頭鷹和驢一起掉進了深谷。
