Gong sun Long(公孫龍), a famousscholarlived in the State of Zhao (趙國) during the Warring States Period (戰國,475――221BC), had a habitof maintaininga great number of skilledpeople around him.
戰國時期，趙國有位名士叫公孫龍。他手下聚集了許多有自己特長的門客。
He often said, "A wise man should welcome anyone with a specialty."
他常說：“一個聰明人應該善於接納每一個有自己特長的人。”
One day, a man in shabbyclothes came to see him and said to him:" I have a special skill. "Gong asked: "What is it?""I have a loud voice and I'm good at shouting."
有一天，有個穿着很破爛的人來見他，並向他推薦自己：“我有一項特別的本領。”公孫龍就問道：“什麼本領?”那個人回答道：“我聲音特別大，很善於叫喊。”
Then Gong turned to his followers and asked," Who is good at shouting?" But none of them answered "Yes ". So the scholar took the man in.
公孫龍聽了，就轉身問他旁邊的門客：“你們有誰善於叫喊?”結果沒有一個人回答“是”。於是，他就收下了這個很善於叫的人作他的隨從。
Some days Later, Gong and his followerswent on a trip.
沒過多久，公孫龍和他的門客一起出外遊玩。
They came to a wide river and found the boat was on the other side of the river. All of them had no idea. Suddenly, Gong thought of the shouting expert and turned to him, "Can you have a try?"
他們來到一條很寬的河邊，發現渡船在河的另一頭，所有人都不知怎麼辦好。突然，公孫龍想起他最近收的那個人的本領是善於叫，於是，他就轉過頭去對那人說：“你大聲叫對面的船伕，看能不能把他叫過來。”
The man realized it was the chance to show his skill. He shouted to the ferryman as loud as he could, "Hey, ferryman, come here, we want to cross the river." As his voice ended, the ferryman came to fetch them. Gong was very satisfiedwith the new follower.
那人覺得展示他技能的時候到了，就盡力大聲向對面喊：“喂，船伕，過來，我們要過河。”當他叫聲剛完，那對面的船伕就搖着船過來了。公孫龍對這個新收的門客非常滿意。
Later, people use it to describe anyone who has a special professionalskill.

戰國時期，魏國有個叫樂羊子的人。
Yue Yangzi felt that he should go out and visit scholars to enrich his knowledge. So he set off.
樂羊子離開家到了一個很遠的地方，去拜師求學。
A year later, he came back home suddenly. "Why have you returned?" asked his wife in surprise, "You've only spent one year studying with scholars."
一年後，樂羊子突然回到家中，他的妻子很驚訝地問：“你怎麼回來了?你才和那些學者學了一年呀。”
"I come back because I missed you very much."
樂羊子說：“我太想你了，所以回來看看。”
Without saying anything, his wife took a pair of scissors and went to the loom at which she had worked.
他的妻子聽了以後，二話不說，拿起把剪刀走到她的織布機前。
Pointing at the half done brocade, she proclaimed : "This brocade is woven from the finest silk.I wove one strand after another to produce the brocade. Now if I cut it, all my previous work will be wasted. It's the same with your studies. You can acquire knowledge only through diligence. Now, you've given up halfway. Isn't it the same as cutting the brocade on the loom?"
她指着那塊已經完成了一半的錦緞說：“這塊錦緞用的是最好的絲。我一絲絲的累積來織成這錦緞。如果我現在把它剪斷，就等於前功盡棄。你求學也是這樣。如果現在停止，和剪斷織布機上的錦緞有什麼區別?”
Yue Yangzi was moved by what she said. He again left home to visit scholars. Several years later he became a knowledgable man.
樂羊子被妻子的話所感動，於是立刻離開家，繼續拜師求學。幾年後，樂羊子終於完成學業，成爲一個博學的人。
