Ikea, the multinational group that was founded in Sweden in 1943, known for its ready-to-assemble furniture as well as its cheap and cheerful hot dog station, is launching its first veggie hot dog in all Ikea stores across the U.S..

Thirty-seven years after introducing its standard hot dog, the veggie hot dog was finally launched last month in Ikea’s European stores first—where it exceeded forecasted sales by selling over one million hot dogs to date, a representative from Ikea told me by email last week. Ikea operate 423 stores in 52 markets, including over 240 stores in Europe and 56 stores in North America.

Ikea claims its new veggie hot dog has approximately seven times less Co2 emissions/kg than its standard version. The carbon footprint of the hot dog made from meat is 6.38 kgCO2eq/kg, while the veggie hot dog has a carbon footprint of 1.02 kgCO2eq/kg. The new veggie hot dog ingredients include kale, red lentils, carrots and ginger.

“The emissions factors are provided by external consultants and include all greenhouse gases,” a representative from Ikea told me via email, “The carbon footprint of a product is estimated as the total emissions from the ingredients in the products divided by the mass of the product. The emissions are calculated using ingredient-specific emission factors covering all emission-related activities upstream in the supply-chain.”

The Ikea hot dog was first launched in 1981 and over 100 million hot dogs sell every year, according to the company's website.

Like all of Ikea’s food range, the veggie hot dog was developed by Ikea Food Services in Mälmo, Sweden. “We are facing many challenges in the food production industry today and one of those challenges is that we need to be more sustainable,” explained Michael La Cour, managing director at Ikea Food Services AB, in the press release for the veggie hot dog. “With the global reach that we have at Ikea we believe that we have a responsibility and a great opportunity to serve food that is good for the planet.”

In 2013, Ikea faced controversy when traces of horse meat were found in its Swedish meatballs. The incident was part of a larger scandal affecting products across Europe, including products by Nestlé, which recalled its beef pasta meals after test results indicated horse DNA was present.

As part of their efforts toward becoming more sustainable, some of the measures Ikea has implemented include initiating a food waste solution to cut its food waste to 50% by 2020 and investing in indoor vertical farming company Aerofarms, which has a global headquarters in Newark, New Jersey, operating a 70,000-square-foot indoor vertical farm that produces 2 million pounds of leafy green per year. Over 200,000 kilograms of food was saved during Ikea’s financial year 2017 as part of its food waste program, which it calculates as 865 tons of carbon emissions, or nearly 450,000 meals.

The Ikea Food Services Instagram account is fielding large numbers of comments and questions about the new veggie hot dog, and confirmed in its most recent post that while the veggie hot dog is made from a vegan recipe, the bun can differ from market to market, so consumers should double check before taking a bite.
