Chinese primary and secondary school pupils spendlonger at school and take more extra-curriculartutoring classes compared with their peers in othercountries, a report said.

一份報告顯示，與其他國家的中小學生相比，我國中小學生在校學習以及參加課外補習班的時間均更長。

In 2015, the average school time for primary pupilsincreased to 8.1 hours a day, from 6.7 hours in 2010, according to the report released by the 21stCentury Education Research Institute.

這份由21世紀教育研究院發佈的報告稱，2015年，全國小學生平均在校時間從2010年的6.7小時增加到8.1小時。

Besides, middle-school students spent 11 hours a day in school in 2015, compared with 7.7 hours five years ago, it said.

此外，該報告還指出，我國中學生的平均在校時間也從五年前的7.7小時增加到11小時。

In addition, Chinese students were overloaded with homework, which also placed pressure ontheir parents. About 80% of parents said they had to closely supervise their children whilethey completed their homework.

Chinese students also spent more time on learning outside the official classroom setting. Bythe end of 2016, about 137 million students had taken part in extra-curricular tutoring classes, the report said.

Chinese students spent 17 hours a week on learning after classes finished, much longer thanthe 7.8-hour average internationally.

A primary school at Sanmenli Village in GongzhulingCity in northeast China's Jilin Province has come intospotlight — two teachers teach just one 12-year-oldstudent.

Chen Hongyan works as the class teacher while LiuHaitao as PE teacher. The situation has startedseveral years ago, Xinhua reported.

When the only student, Wang Hao, reads the text in class as the new semester begins, Chenwill feed coal into the furnace from time to time as the classroom isn't equipped with heatingsystem.

Although there is only one student at the school, Wang never misses a single class on Chinese, mathematics, English or early-morning individual study.

Wang has seven classes a day. Chen has set 14 alarm clocks as Wang's school bells.

"I treat my only student seriously as well, otherwise my conscience cannot justify what I do," said Chen who has been in her post at the school for 18 years, "I certainly can not give up onany student."

Chen also encourages Wang to play with other kids in the village for fear that he may feellonely.

Wang's father often checks in on his son when he passes the school on his way to herd sheepand he appreciates the persistence of the two teachers.

王浩的父親經常在放羊路上路過學校看望兒子，他很感激這兩位老師的堅持。

Village secretary Wang Lixin said the school once had dozens of teachers and more than 200 students. But teachers retired and students transferred to schools in towns nearby after 2010.

村書記王立新表示，學校曾經有幾十名教師和200多名學生。但在2010年之後，教師們退休了，學生們就轉學到附近城鎮的學校了。
