點滴英語天天學第15課:nod(6)之一

在今天的課堂上，我們將要學習的是用含有nod這個名詞，可以表示“to give permission for something”這個意思的一個Idiom。它是什麼呢？請看下面的例句：

例句-1： She's a tough nut to crack; I don't think she'll give us the nod to have a romantic vocation in Paris.

例句-2： She implored her mother to give her the nod to go on the trip in Guilin.

在上面的2個例句中，都使用了同一個短語：give sb. the nod，nod在這裏的詞性是名詞。在我們的生活工作中，如果對方同意你的觀點或意見等，允許你去做某事的時候，經常會伴有點頭這個動作，因此不難理解，give sb. the nod的意思即爲：允許……；對……表示同意。

下面我們來細看Example One——She's a tough nut to crack; I don't think she'll give us the nod to have a romantic vocation in Paris. 這句話是說：她這個人不好說話，我想她不會同意我們去巴黎浪漫度假的。在這個句子中，我們要注意3個要點。

第一個要點是一個習語：a tough nut to crack。A touch nut to crack表示“棘手的事情，難以應付的問題或情況”或者是“難以對付的人，難說服或影響的人”。例如：It is a tough nut for him to crack.（這對他而言是一個難題。）He's a tough nut to crack.（他是個很難說服的人。）

第二要點是既可表示“度假”又可表示“擁有一份工作”的短語：have a vocation。例如：. It became urgent that I should have a vocation of some kind.（我要找個什麼職業，這已經是迫不急待的事了。）I'm going to have my winter vocation in Shanghai, in which I have a few close friends.（我準備到上海度寒假，那兒有我的一些好朋友。）

第三要點是：用give sb. the nod表示贊同，同意某人去做某事要用動詞不定式。句子中是“gave us the nod to have a romantic vocation in Paris”，to have a romantic vocation in Paris是動詞不定式短語做目的狀語。
