在經典電影《電子情書》裏，Joe Fox的女朋友約他出去參加一個晚宴，他說到：“It is a black tie.”意思是“這是正式的場合。”由此，我們可以知道a black tie不只是用來指“一條黑色的領帶”，還可以用來指“正式場合的晚宴，喜慶和表演”。
